The Citizen, 1999-12-08, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1999. Jolly skater Brent Wheeler got into the spirit of things as he enjoyed the Brussels community skating party on Friday night. Besides skating youngsters got a chance to visit with the ‘real’ St. Nick. (Vicky Bremnerphoto) A Note from Betty We’ve had a pretty exciting week, just like it’s supposed to be in the waiting time of Christmas. Did you get skating on Friday night? It sounded like fun. The parade on Saturday kept a lot of folk busy organizing and doing. Thanks for your enthusiasm and for keeping small towns a privileged place to live. The staff Christmas party brigade were busy getting in the festive mood and reviewing a good year of working together - well mostly - but it’s still good to socialize. I missed all the frivolity, poor me. Phil and I headed for Ottawa on Friday to check on the living conditions and general well being of middle son Curt. He’s working as technical support for Bell Internet and trying some Carlton University courses. He’s well and is enjoying the Capital Life. The talents of Sarah Garland and Becky Grummett (Brussels Public) were recognized by the Legion Provincial Command - Junior Division Remembrance Day contest. Their poetry and poster won and the smiles were plentiful as they spoke of their $20 first prize. They didn’t mention my Christmas gift. Rita Deitner tells me that the Catholic Women's League had a good time at their bazaar in November. They made a little money, had a little fun and sent several people home with prizes. On tickets sold before the bazaar - Ilene Haggitt won $75 and Mitchell Blake got $20. John Blake won a Santa, Brandon Blake won a painted item and Patty West won half a pig. On sale day the sellers were busy again. Carrie Baker took home a snowman cake while Jill Sholdice danced off with her Santa Claus cake. Dianne Fleming won a picture frame - Clem and Phyllis were good agents - Patty and Dianne have connections. Anne Ryan is the owner of a new baby quilt and Cindy Vaness has a new Santa for her collection. Looking over the winners I think some of these people have their shopping starred thanks to the CWL. Be sure to check the coming events and church page for times and dates in the festive season. Sunday night is the Brussels ministerial event at the Mennonite Church - come and get your carol singing in practise. Reminds me of the slogan, Jesus is the Reason for the Season! Bye now, Betty G.
