to take over policing meant the
Wingham Police Services board had
no jurisdiction over the town force,
even though the county has not set
up its own police board as yet. “They
(the county) own us.”
After the county took over all
policing Wingham sent the county an
invoice of $151,000 for the cost of
policing in the town from May to
Aug. 31. The county rejected the bill,
with the administration, finance and
personnel committee saying Bylaw 9
continues the Wingham Police
Service.
Wingham, through its solicitor
John Skinner, has indicated it will
take the county to court to determine
if Bylaw 9 is legal. If it is legal,
Wingham contends the county is
responsible for costs of disbanding
the force, such as severance for
employees.
Aj the Nov. 4 meeting of county
council, councillors were told the
costs of settlement with the disband
ing of the Goderich force were under
$50,000 but Wingham Police Chief
Jim Dore says the situation may be
different in Wingham. Some officers
are nearing retirement age and might
want retirement packages rather than
a chance to join the OPP, he said.
“It’s a mess,” said Pletch. “It didn’t
have to be, but it is.”
