Clinton Christian school news Students fundraise with Barmy Tech By Jonathan Reinink, Nathaniel Rider and Stephanie Dean During the first two months of school the students at Clinton District Christian School (CDCS) have been raising money for the poor in Bangladesh. Many women in these Third World countries are given an opportunity to support their families through an organization called Ten Thousand Villages. This year the students at CDCS. with the help of Ten Thousand Villages, have been selling Christmas cards, handmade by these women out of their homes. Also during this time the students have been selling cotton and canvas bags from Brussels-based Barmy Filled to capacity Tech. By selling these the students are proud to be supporting a cottage industry based in Huron County. Students were especially pleased to know the purchase of these reusable bags would prevent many plastic bags from being thrown in the local dumps. In total the students have sold about $3,300 worth of cards for the women in Bangladesh and about $6,000 worth of bags and aprons for Barmy Tech. On Wednesday, Nov. 3, all interested Grade 8 students were invited to London and District Christian Secondary School for its annual Grade 8 day. The CDCS Grade 8 class, along with almost 140 other Grade 8 students from other area Christian schools attended the high school tor the day. The Grade 8 students got an early impression of what high school is going to be like as they attended a few classes and participated in a volleyball tournament. During the week of Nov. I - 5 the Grades 7 and 8 students began trying out for the volleyball teams at CDCS. There are presently about 13 boys and 12 girls on the volleyball teams. They meet for practices at noon hour every other day and after school on Mondays. This will continue until the tournament on Dec. 10. The students have been curiously watching as their parents have been raising funds to support the school. Since September there have been a number of fundraisers. During the Plowing Match, Sept. 21 - 25, in Dashwood, CDCS had a food booth. The volunteer parents sold a lot of great food and made a profit of $9,400. On Nov. 5, CDCS had its annual talent and services auction. Guelph area WI marks 60 years By Leone Foerter Forever Young was the theme for the Diamond Jubilee of the Guelph Area Women’s Institute, held at the Brussels, Morris, Grey Community Centre Oct. 13 and 14. Keeping the theme in mind, nearly 300 members, guests and friends from Wellington, Perth, Huron, Waterloo, and Halton Counties joined together for the occasion. On Wednesday afternoon members attended workshops of their choice, such as healthy eating, gemology, brain gym and a workshop on the FWlO’s handbook for 1999. Area President Glenna Smith of the Arkell Branch chaired the convention; she extended a warm welcome to all at the banquet on Wednesday evening. Public Relations Officer Leone Foerter of Clifford introduced speciaLguests. An anniversary cake commemorating the event was featured on the head table, and was cut by Mrs. Smith and eldest serving Area past-president, Agnes Reist of the Helena Feasby Branch, who now resides in Kitchener. The guest speaker, OPP Detective Sgt. Barrie Elliot spoke on Phonebusters; his work since 1991 has been to put telemarketing scam artists out of business. In 1993 Sgt. Elliot established Phonebusters, a national task force based in North Bay. It is part of the OPP antirackets branch and works with partners at the federal, provincial and private levels. Since 1995 there have been 12,000 known victims of telemarketing fraud in Canada, 6,000 of them in Ontario, resulting in $40 million losses. Eighty per cent of the losses have been victims 60 years and older. Women’s Institutes have been active working toward safer and healthier communities, and this fall their endeavour is to work with Phonebusters to help prevent unnecessary personal trauma caused by telemarketing fraud. Sgt. Elliot showed a video which left the crowd in wonderment and shock. Sentimental Journey, a well- known vocal group from Listowel, sang several delightful selections. On Thursday Mrs. Smith and Vice-President Barbara Pinkney of Listowel shared the duties of chairperson.
