The Citizen, 1999-10-27, Page 10PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1999. L. McDonald recalls fire A memory for Leona Mcdonald was when she was just a little girl and her home above the Phillips Fruit Store in Seaforth was on fire. If it hadn’t been for Frank Phillips who carried Leona out in a baby buggy, she would not be here now. Leona said the whole block of buildings was on fire. She also recalls riding everywhere with her dad in the cream truck.. When in Walton they would go to Doug Ennis’s store and he would always give her and her Dad a free chocolate bar. Chocolate bars in those days were five cents. In talking about the weather the other day Leona remembered her wedding day Oct. 28, 1950. It was 84°F. On Nov. 4 of that same year it snowed like crazy and it stayed. 61 William Street, Brussels (Corner of William & Albert) ^jrrooming ^Lvailable! Fire Department came to Walton School to give a Fire Safety for Kids presentation for the Grade 3/4s. They saw an excellent video and he gave the children a book about fire safety. Thank you to the community sponsors for this valuable book. The kindergartens had a great week learning about the letter N. They worked on writing and recognizing their names, made nifty noodle necklaces and made up a nurse’s station. Thanks to Mrs. Gerber, Mrs. Vellenga and Mrs. Bachert for helping. The Grade l/2s used their senses to explore texture and colour. They created paintings with feathers, balloon brushes, bark, straws and cotton balls. They took prints of mesh and crumpled tinfoil, waxed paper and plastic wrap. They made crayon rubbings of baskets and classroom textures and modelled objects with oatmeal playdough. These activities helped the children understand texture. Happy birthday to Joan Vandendool this past week and Mrs. Scott on Tuesday.
