The Citizen, 1999-10-27, Page 8PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1999. Brussels Atoms winl, lose 1 First outing good for Blyth Novices The Brussels Atom Rep team opened its regular season play on Friday night with a win against Hensall. Hensail started the scoring within the first 30 seconds of the game and managed to score twice more in the first period, the third goal being a shorthanded one. Brussels then took over the scoring for the remainder of the ’> game. Christopher Jutzi scored on a pass from Andrew McDonald and Doug Schnock with just under four minutes left in the first period. Jutzi again scored on a beauty pass from Justin Mayne with only less than a second in the first period. Matt White tipped the puck into the net in the second period on a slapshot from defenseman Mitch Blake to tie up the game. James Roberts scored on a breakaway in the third to ensure a win. The referees remarked that they couldn’t remember calling as many penalties in an Atom game before; 26 minutes were called in total. The men in stripes managed to keep good control of a game that had the potential to get out of hand with Brussels winning 4-3. Saturday Mitchell came to town. The play went from one end to the other with many missed chances on both sides. Brussels’ goalie, Kyle Gibson was playing in top form and managed to keep the puck out of his net until the third period. The final score of the game was 1-0 for Mitchell. The Blyth Novice Bulldogs had a successful season opener, with a defeat over Clinton on Saturday, Oct. 23. Coach Bob Robertson and trainer, Darryl Youngblut, have 12 eager players. First year Novices Matt Stevenson, Brett Courtney, Kenny Plunkett and Claren Yuill are blending in well with the veterans of the team. Blyth attacked quickly with first- period goals by Derek Youngblut, Lee Watkins, assisted by Roman Sturzenegger and Tony Bean scoring. The goals were even in the second, with Clinton’s Ian Clark scoring, before Bean netted his second for the Bulldogs. However, the floodgates opened in the third, as Blyth’s Curtis Robertson and Bean scored two each and Plunkett and Johnathon McDowell netted one each. Clinton’s lone goal came from Colin Thompson as Blyth’s goalie. Anthony Peters stopped everything else that came his way. Byron Broome of Blyth made several rushing attacks, but was thwarted by Clinton’s netminder, B.J. Dennome. The final score was 10-2 for Blyth.
