3,462 cattle on block F arm
Total receipts at Brussels
Livestock for the week ending
Sept. 17 were. 3.462 head of cattle,
and 434 lambs and 35 goats.
There were 442 steers on offer
selling from $89 to $94 to the high
of $102. On Thursday veal sold on
a very strong active trade. Lambs
sold steady. Stocker calves sold $2
to $3 higher with yearlings selling
on a steady trade.

averaging 1,382 lbs. sold to
Dominion Meat Packers for $102
with their overall offering of 102
steers averaging 1,454 lbs. selling
for an average of $92.75. One
limousin steer consigned by Walter

MNR broadens rabies drop
The Ministry of Natural
Resources will drop one million
anti-rabies baits in much of
southern Ontario this month to
continue its work to wipe out the
arctic fox strain of rabies.
“Our previous work against fox
rabies has been so successful that
we are able to declare some areas
of southern Ontario free of fox
rabies,” said Natural Resources
Minister John Snobelen. “Now,
we’re concentrating on other
counties. Our goal is to eliminate
arctic fox rabies in southern
Ontario in the next few years.”
The project began Sept. 20 from
the Stratford airport and Sept. 26
from the Peterborough airport.
MNR twin otter aircraft will drop
about one million baits containing
rabies vaccine to immunize native
foxes against arctic fox rabies.
Baits will be dropped across rural
areas from Lake Huron in the west
to Napanee in the east. Operations
will continue until Oct. 2.
The aerial baiting operation is
one of a number of projects the
government has undertaken this
year to protect the public against
rabies. Additionally, MNR has
conducted an aggressive campaign
in the Brockville-Prescott area in
response to two raccoons that had
the raccoon strain of rabies. MNR
has also undertaken rabies control

projects at major bridges in
southern Ontario and in ravines in
Toronto.
“MNR’s Rabies Research Unit is
already known internationally for
its research and development in
wildlife immunization,” Snobelen
said. "With this project, the
government is building on past
successes in the fight against fox
rabies and reinforcing the unit’s
position as world leader in wildlife
rabies research.”

HCFA holds annual meeting
Oct. 7 is a date not to miss if
interested in agriculture. Six
prominent agricultural leaders are
coming to Brussels to tell what
they want agriculture to look like in
the next century. The theme of the
meeting is “Charting a Course for
Agriculture”.
Four heads of leading farm
organizations are among the
panelists. John Core, dairy; Will
Nap, pork; Anna Bragg, com and
Ed Segsworth, OFA, will be joined
by board directors John Maaskant,
chickens and Stan Eby, beef.
Each person will have five
minutes to present their version of
what they want their industry to be
like. Twenty minutes of questions
from the floor and among the
panelists should stimulate a lively
