The Citizen, 1999-09-08, Page 16PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1999. Plan to rid museum of bats stirs up neighbours \ plan to get 2.000-3.000 bats out of the attic of the Huron County Museum has stirred up a hornet's nest in Goderich. Neighbours, worried the bats will take up roost in their homes, have complained to the county and the Town of Goderich. County council lors were assured by museum cura tor Claus Breede that the bats will be trapped and taken far away from the area before they are released. Tenders have been called for pro posals to humanely remove the bats and patch all holes to keep them from returning to the attic of the "old school" portion of the muse um. It’s estimated the cost will be $20,000 - $25,000. Breede said that while bats are valuable, eating 600-1,000 mosquito-sized insects a day, they have been getting inside the muse um building and playing havoc with the security sensors, regularly setting off alarms because of sig nals they send out. As well bat droppings in the attic are sending odour throughout the building and causing a potential health problem. The proposal is to trap the bats as they emerge at night and when the trap is full, take it at least 10 km from Goderich. When asked who would determine where the bats were released, Breede jokingly sug gested part of Perth County might be included if council wished. Food industry could bring jobs She bakes the cake Continued from page 12 Initiatives for Manufacturing Study, said in proportion to its number one position in agricultural production, Huron should have 3,400 jobs in food manufacturing instead of 950. While companies aren’t likely to just move to Huron, food produc tion companies have indicated they plan a huge investment in the industry in the coming years and some of that could be a goal for the county, he said. Jerry Pisarzowski, of GPA Con sulting told council that a survey of 173 manufacturers in the county found quality of life and wage costs were attractions for doing business in Huron while lack of access to major highways was a weakness in luring industries or promoting growth in current industries. One of the challenges smaller industries face is attracting quali fied personnel. Smaller companies surveyed also felt they were getting short shrift from municipal politicians, Pisar zowski said. On the plus side, the companies surveyed projected employment growth of 20 per cent in coming years, leading to a potential growth of 900 jobs, Baroudi said. The study is ongoing and will result in recommendations on how the county can create a strategy to create more jobs. By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff When it comes to her new busi ness, Samantha Terpstra bakes the cake. Though she had been making special cakes for her children, Cur tis, three and Matthew, two. Brus sels-area owner of Creative Cakes said the inspiration to learn more about cake decorating began with a request from her eldest. “He want ed a Buzz L ghtyear cake for his birthday. We did find one in a store, but looking at it, I felt that I could do something like this.” Once she decided that it might be worthwhile to leam all the tricks of the trade, Terpstra signed on for a course in Kitchener. “It certainly does make it easier when you really know the technique,” she says. She enjoyed the courses and the work so much, she decided to go into business.
