OPP contract stalls again
as county debates issue
The page

The Grade 8 student was introduced by Reeve Robin
Dunbar.
There was disagreement at the
Sept. 2 meeting of Huron County
council whether or not the province
is moving closer to signing a con
tract for county-wide OPP policing
in Huron.
Huron's contract calls for the
OPP to police all of the county
except the Town of Wingham
which wants to retain its own
police force. Initially officials in
the solicitor general’s office had
objected to signing an agreement
that did not cover the entire county
but Lynn Murray, county clerk
administrator said a meeting with
the deputy solicitor general seemed
to indicate the province may be
coming part way to Huron’s posi
tion.
“The province has softened its
stand but hasn't come all of the
way to make it palatable for Wing
ham,” she said.
But during question period, Larry
McCabe, clerk-administrator of the
Town of Goderich, which has
opposed Wingham keeping its
police force, said his reading of
correspondence from the solicitor
general’s office seemed to strength
en the view that the contract must
involve the entire county.
Warden Carol Mitchell said the
county’s position has not changed,
that it wants to allow Wingham to
keep its force as long as it wishes.

Bernice Gross, organist
welcomed everyone with a prelude
to Knox United Church.
Rev. Paul Ross lit the Christ
Candle.
The worship service was a
celebration of scripture and song.
In scripture from Genesis 3 God
told Adam that because he had not
followed rules he would regret it.
The Sabbath Day should be kept
as free from work as possible, a day
of rest. The scripture for this was
from Exodus 20.
The next scripture was from
Nehemiah 4. Here the workers on
the wall had weapons for protection
against enemies. “God is always
with us as we work,” said Rev.
Ross.
Scripture from 2 Thessalonians 3
was read. Paul told his disciples to
not associate with evil people and
to always be willing workers. Of
course this is what everyone must
willingly do.
Rev. Ross continued with
scripture from Matthew 21. Two
young men were given orders by
their father -one said “No” but then
went and did as asked. The second
said “yes” but did not do his work.
Who was in the wrong?
These are all acts that must be
remembered, said Rev. Ross.
The offering was received by
Shirley Andrews and her
granddaughter, Erica.
The Plowing Match ecumenical
church service will be Sept. 19 at
7 p.m. at the Zurich arena. Paul
Henderson will be the guest
speaker.
