The Citizen, 1999-08-18, Page 3THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18, 1999. PAGE 3. Kathy’s Korner By Kathy Bromley On Monday, Aug. 2 the Huron-Bruce Liberal Party had a get-together in the Blyth Lions Park, a central location. Bev and Steve Bromley put on a com roast and hot dog meal which was enjoyed by all. Ross Lamont, who gave Helen Johns a close race, thanked everyone for their help and support throughout the election. Other guest speakers also gave words of encouragement. It was a nice way for everyone to be reunited again. Thursday, Aug. 12 was “Glad Day” throughout Huron County. In Blyth, the flowers were available in Scrimgeour's Knechtel Store. This is an annual fundraiser for the Epilepsy Association and an excellent way to emphasize public awareness concerning over-activity of the brain, which could affect anyone at any given time. The money raised from this event goes to a very worthwhile cause. Blyth and area Dining Out Although Friday, Aug. 7 was a cool day with showers, 26 people attended the monthly Community Dining program sponsored by Town and Country Support Services. Blyth Trinity Anglican Church set a nice atmosphere in comparison to outside. The meal was an appetizing variety of food for a picnic - cold meats, numerous salads with various relish trays. This was completed with ice cream and garnishes to top it off. This month Leo Dyk was the lucky winner of the door prize, while Shirley Rutledge won the 50/50 draw. Birthdays for the month of August will be celebrated by Hermina Dyke, Feme Howatt, Evelyn Rich, Doris Hicks and Leah Davis. Condolences go out to Bill and Isabel Craig on the death of their daughter. Nancy Jean Craig of New Hamburg. Following the meal, “Summer Bingo” was played. Cards were handed out and questions were then asked concerning summer. After the card was completed, answers were pulled out of a hat and bingo was underway! Francis Clark of Auburn was the first winner for a line. Doris Hicks won the T shape and Feme Howatt had the X bingo. It was enjoyable seeing bingo being played in a different fashion. And we did not need dabbers - macaroni was used instead. Following the meal and entertainment, the advisory board had the quarterly meeting. We are now in the midst of fundraising for money needed to purchase a portable piano, as most people have stressed that they would enjoy more musical events. The next meal is scheduled for Sept. 3, with Bernice Glenn of Dungannon being the guest for the afternoon. Kathy’s Quote of the Week: If you want to re-capture your youth, just cut off their allowance. A birthday Everett Scrimgeour, son of Lome and Emma Scrimgeour, and father of Douglas and Donald, marked his 80th birthday recently. Mr. Scrimgeour worked as a car penter at the army base in Clinton for many years before moving to Trenton. He even tually returned to Huron County and Blyth. Tup. council approves coverage for firefighters Paramedics get pink slips With the pink slips handed out, paramedics in Seaforth, Clinton and Zurich are now facing the pos sibility of unemployment on Jan. 1, 2000. However, according to a media report, Huron County’s Manager of Corporate Services Craig Metzger said the paramedics will likely have their jobs for at least another year, in spite of the notices. The problem arose when the province downloaded land ambu lance services to upper-tier munici palities and gave them a Sept. 30 deadline to decide how to handle the service. Though Huron County received a one-year extension of that deadline, there has been nothing received in writing because the provincial leg islature is out for the summer. With no legislation passed con firming the deadline extension, Seaforth, Clinton and Zurich paramedics, members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, were probably pink-slipped to cover the four-month notice as required by their contract, said Metzger. He expects the county to take full advantage of the extension as he does not see how a decision for land ambulance service could be made by Sept. 30. The county is planing a series of public meetings this fall to gather input. The three options suggested to contract the current providers, have the county provide ambulance services or tender to select providers. Information received would be discussed at a committee meeting Nov. 18 with a recommendation going to county council no sooner than Dec. 2. While the Seaforth, Clinton and Zurich paramedics received their notices two weeks ago, employees in Dashwood had not. East Wawanosh council passed a motion at the Aug. 3 meeting, approving an insurance coverage increase for Blyth firefighters. The volunteer firefighters acci dent insurance will double from $100,000 to $200,000 at a cost of $870.76. The additional cost will be shared by member municipali ties in the fire area board. It was also moved that all boards in the restructured municipality should remain as they are. TEST YOUR THRESHING KNOWLEDGE WHAT IS IT? We believe... in helping.. Anyone. Anywhere.
