School holds year-end assembly
By John Battyc
The year-end assemblies were
held on Tuesday, June 29 at Blyth
Public School. Many parents
attended the assemblies to see the
students receive trophies and
awards. Arm bars were presented
for school sports teams, public
speaking, attendance, computer,
library club, conflict managers,
newspaper and students’ council.
All of the participants in the
Gauss Math Contest were given
certificates for their effort.
Trophies were awarded to the
students who participated in public
speaking and the regional track and
field meet.
We would like to thank the
Legion for providing the trophies
for track and field. We would also
like to thank Bainton’s and the Old
Mill, south of Blyth for donating
the trophies for public speaking.
Certificates of merit were given
to all the Grade 4 - 8 students and
merit pins were given to the
kindergarten to Grade 3 students
for their great effort this year.
By Alicia Marshall
Grade 3/4 enjoyed a day at
Wawanosh Nature Centre on June
18 with excellent weather.
In the morning, they took part in
compass orienteering and received
compliments from Kirsten about
the way they learned to, “put
Snoopy in the doghouse,” and on
reading the map which required
finding several “bearings”.
In the afternoon, they ate their
litterless lunches and played the
survival game. The participants
wore pinnies that indicated whether
they were a carnivore (meat eater),
herbivore (plant eater), or omnivore
(meat and plant eater).
They found out about the effects
of disease, environmentalists,
habitat destroyers, the elements
(weather) apd the importance of
food and water.
They had a wonderful time at
East Wawanosh Nature Centre and
would like to thank Esther Buck
and Kirsten Baldwin.
The students wish the following
staff members good luck in their
new positions for the 1999 - 2000
school year: Richard Maertens is
going to be vice-principal at
Howick Central; Dave Shaw is on
special leave and Dianne Grail will
be a teacher at Robertson Memorial
Public School.
We also look forward to meeting
a new staff member Ms Sharri
MacDonald and our new principal
Mrs. Wilhemina Laurie in
September.

4-H Club learns about goats
By Amy Barnes
and Stephanie Munday
On June 9 the Huron 4-H Goat
Club held its second meeting at the
Parishs’ dairy goat farm near Blyth.
This gave the members the rare
opportunity to view a large-scale
dairy goat operation.
The group practised judging four
milkers and discussed milk prices.
They then moved on to a regular
meeting, in which they learned
about milking procedures and
sterilization.

Computer know-how:
making your operating system
year 2000 bug-proof
(NC) — When preparing, your
computer for a glitch-free transition
into the year 2000, knowing what to
repair is almost as important as how to
do it. Some basic components require
special attention when ‘immunizing’
your PC against the Millennium Bug.
Your hardware, operating system,
application software, data, and data
that is shared with other PCs, all need
to be tested for Year 2000 compliance.
Your computer’s operating system,
which is typically included when you
purchase your PC, runs basic programs
and needs to be checked to make sure
it'll work normally come January 1,
2000. Here’s how to test your operating
system:
If you are running Microsoft
Windows 95 (most people are), check
to see how your date system is set up
by looking under the “Regional
Settings” icon in the Control Panel.
Generally, it is recommended that
you change the date format from
DD/MM/YY to DD/MM/YYYY in the
field at the bottom of the screen.
However, some programs may not,
accept this format.
Most PCs' operating systems will
work into the year 2000 if they have
been set up correctly. Identify the
manufacturer of the operating system,
the product name and the version
number. This information should be
on the original program disks and
packaging, or use the ‘About’ choice
in the help menu if you are running
Windows.
Check with the manufacturer on
the Year 2000 status of the product.
This should be available by accessing
their Web site or by contacting your
retailer.
Surf the Web. Visit , Industry
Canada’s Internet site for the Task
Force Year 2000 Secretariat for Year
2000 information, or call their toll-
free Year 2000 line at 1 -800-270-8220
for a copy of the Millennium Bug
Home Check.
