Adrienne Wilson fulfills dream playing at Blyth First love Adrienne Wilson delights in finding teen love in That Summer, experienced love in Every Dream. she fell in love with is still pretty much the same. “She’s that perfect blend of youth — innocent, curious and insecure, all wrapped up into a charming little 17-year-old.” Wilson says that she relates well to all of Maggie's attributes, but is enjoying the fact that the play is set for a time in the 1950s. “Seventeen now is different than then. They really were kids in the 1950s. You were supposed to be a kid and were allowed to be a kid. The innocence is what’s so charming.” For the 28-year-old playing someone 11 years younger isn’t much of a stretch. “That time in my life is so vivid and the way the script is written is vivid, it's not difficult. It’s almost like I get to redo things but get to do them as someone else.” “Actually,” laughs the actor who is typically cast as young teens, “it’s probably going to be a bigger Continued on Pg. 6 By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff As a student at Acadia in Nova Scotia, Adrienne Wilson dreamed of someday appearing at Blyth. “The Festival has a reputation, like Stratford and Shaw and I thought I would love to work there.” Wilson began writing to the artistic team at Blyth expressing her interest and finally got the chance to audition last season. Unfortunately, there was nothing for her at that time, but Artistic Director Anne Chislett, thought the bubbly brunette might be just right for a character in the David French play That Summer which she planned for the 1999 season. “They said call us in the fall, so Sept I, I was on the phone.” She did a reading and in February was contracted to appear in not just one role but two, as Margaret in Summer and Sylvia in Every Dream. This play allows the love story to unfold on stage. “It is a play about love and about how with time, you can overcome the pain of things. “‘Time steals everything but memories,’ that is what the play is about,” says Glassco. The intricate tale tells four love stories, some witnessed on stage and others alluded to. Glassco, who founded Toronto’s famous Tarragon Theatre where French’s previous plays debuted, believes Blyth is exactly the kind of theatre in which That Summer should come to life. “These are the kinds of audiences which can relate to the stories.” It is a summer romance in a summer theater. While Glassco will only be in the community for a few weeks during rehearsals, he says if he does his job right, there is no reason to stay around. “And the actors prefer it that way,” he says. After the previews and opening night, the stage manager runs the productions. They are the boss and they control how the show runs nightly. Bill Glassco: director has specialized in new plays.
