HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION
OF ONTARIO FACTS
* Our mission is to reduce premature death and
disability from heart disease and stroke by raising
funds for research and health promotion.
4* Our contributions to research and health promotion
have contributed to reducing heart and stroke-related
deaths by approximately 35%, over the past 10
years. As the largest funder of non-commercial
cardiovascular research, the Foundation has been
instrumental in keeping the top research minds in
Ontario.
4* The Foundation is a community-based organization
with 65,000 Ontario-based volunteers. In 1998,
these volunteers helped raise over $40 million,
primarily through individual public donations.
4* We maintain the province's largest non-commercial
heart and stroke research program, supporting 60
percent of all such research - we do not receive direct
funds from government. Still, our research program
currently meets only 37% of the dollars requested by
Ontario's research community.
* Over 200 research teams at 22 universities and
teaching hospitals are funded by the Foundation to
pursue life-saving investigations.
4* We've undertaken critical, new initiatives' in recent
years to raise public and health professional
awareness of heart disease and stroke among
women and ethnic populations, such as the South
Asian community. In 1995, the Foundation launched
a major information campaign specific to stroke. A
Stroke Fund has been set up to stimulate more
research on this prevalent and debilitating disease.
We are also advocating for better medical care for
stroke in the province.
4* We have in place a very active health promotion
program, which includes the creation of a number of
best-selling heart healthy cookbooks and a fund and
colourful kids' fun pack. Also, we have a well-
recognized professional education program to
continually deliver new insights on heart disease and
stroke diagnosis, treatment and prevention to health
professionals.
4* Our national voice, the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Canada, sets the guidelines for
Emergency Cardiac Care in Canada.
4* The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario is part of
a national network of Heart and Stroke Foundations
that supports research and health promotion in 10
provinces and the Yukon. Our origins date back to
1952, when a group of concerned citizens and
doctors founded the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

PREVALENCE OF HEART DISEASE
AND STROKE
4* While heart and stroke-related deaths have declined
significantly over the past 10 years, these diseases
still remain the single largest cause of mortality
among Canadians. In 1995, heart disease and
stroke accounted for:
4* 39% of all Canadian deaths
4* 79,000 deaths
4* In comparison, cancer (the second leading cause of
death) accounted for 29% of Canadian deaths.
4* Although exact figures are not know, it's estimated
that 1 in every 4 Canadians has either some sort of
heart condition, disease of the blood vessels such as
high blood pressure or hardening of the arteries
(atherosclerosis), or stroke-related illness.
4* Of the 79,000 deaths due to circulatory disease, 56%
are due to coronary artery disease and 20% to
strokes. "Coronary artery disease" includes heart
attacks (28% of all heart and stroke deaths), angina,
and hardening of the coronary arteries
(atherosclerosis).
4* Because females on average live longer than males,
proportionately more females than males die from
heart disease and stroke, (39% versus 36%
respectively).
4* The significant decline in heart and stroke-related
deaths seen over the past decades is -now expected
to stop, with experts predicting that an upward swing
in mortality rates may re-occur. This is particularly
true for stroke. The key reason is that our population
is aging rapidly.
4» 12% of the Canadian population is now over age 65
4* By year 2016, this proportion will grow to at
least 16%
4* By year 2041, almost 1/4 (23%) of the Canadian
population will be over age 65
HEART AND STROKE RESEARCH
4* Since its formation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation
of Ontario has supported about $324 million for
research into the causes, treatment and prevention
of heart disease and stroke.
4* The Foundation supports two-thirds of all non
commercial heart and stroke research in the
province. It currently supports'1 over 200 research
teams in 22 research sites. As the largest funder of
non-commercial cardiovascular research, the
Foundation has been instrumental in keeping the top
research minds in Ontario.
