It was a very special day for the
family and friends of Mary Helen
Wightman when she celebrated her
90th birthday, Feb. 5.
Mrs. Wightman was bom on the
10th concession of Elma Twp. in
Perth County to Suzanna and
Emerson Vipond. She attended a
rural country school in Elma Twp.
before advancing to Listowcl Sec
ondary School and the Toronto
Normal School.
Mrs. Wightman began leaching
at #11 East Wawanosh Twp., then
spent many years at Scott's School
in the township. She was dearly
loved by her pupils at Scott's
School and kept in touch with
many of them for years. She also
taught at East Wawanosh Central
School in Belgrave and part-time al
Tumbcrry Central School in Wing
ham.
She wed William Leslie Wight
man (died 1964) on July 4, 1931.
Mary and Leslie Wightman
farmed the family farm on Cone.
10 in East Wawanosh Twp. until
they sold it and moved to Blyth in
1955.
Mrs. Wightman lived in Blyth for
37 years before moving to Bracmar
Retirement Centre in Wingham.

eler (died 1988), Joan Crawford of

Rev. talks of report cards
The church service at Knox
United opened with hymn sing,
with Nancy Park the capable
organist.
The children were invited to the
front and out of Rev. Paul Ross's
mystery bag, a report card was
drawn. They then discussed the
value of this before going to their
Sunday School classes.
Scripture was read from Psalm
112 on the good man who trusts in
the Lord and is not afraid.
In Matthew 5 Jesus told them to
do good and worship God, to let
His word be given to others.
Rev. Ross's sermon was on report
cards. Throughout a lifetime one is
making a report of his life to others,
he said. God's word must be
followed.
Gifts offered to God were
collected by Dana and Joyce Bean
and presented at the altar by them
by two of their sons for the Sunday
School.
The Walkerburn Club met for a
special day at Goderich Place. The
occasion was for Martha Daer's
90th birthday. She has been a club
member for a number of years.
A neighbour and member. Ila
Cunningham made a lovely
birthday cake for the occasion.
Every member that could be
there was for this special event.
Mrs. Daer's three daughters also
attended.
