local farmers to learn more about
the program and to assist them in
completing the application form.
These will be hands-on
workshops with the first hour spent
on an overview of the program and
the second hour spent working on
individual applications. Farmers
will require 1995, 1996 and 1997
complete income tax returns or
NISA information for those years
and a preliminary farm income and
expense for 1998. Inventories for
Jan. 1, 1998 and Dec. 31, 1998 will
also be needed.
The following additional sessions
have been arranged: session five,
Friday, Feb. 12, 10 a.m. to 12
noon; session six, Friday, Feb. 19,
10 a.m. to 12 noon.
Both sessions will take place at
the OMAFRA office in Clinton. As
space is limited, it is requested that
farmers pre-register by calling

In the midst of a Huron County
winter, swimming in the lake,
closed beaches and E. Coli counts
can seem distant and unimportant.
Not so for a group of residents who
have come together in the hopes
that a united effort will bring
success in the battle against water
pollution.
The Huron County Surface
Water Coalition was formed last
fall and is a continuation of the
work of SOL-VE (Save Our Lake -
Value Environment). SOLVE,
which was a group with representa
tion from the Ministry of
Environment, OMAFRA, the
Ausable-Bayfield and Maitland
Valley Conservation Authorities,
the Huron and Lambton County
Health Units and the Farm
Environmental Coalition conducted
an extensive study of Lake Huron
water quality in the fall of 1997.
The study hoped to establish a
conclusive determination of
sources of E. Coli contamination.
This could not be done given the
limited data collected, but the
group did compile 18 major
recommendations for action.
The Surface Water Quality
Coalition was formed to implement
these recommendations. The
Coalition, which includes the
groups already mentioned, also has
representation from Huron County
municipalities, cottage associations
from Ashfield, Stanley and Hay
Twp., Centre for Coastal
Conservation.
At a meeting last August the
group identified the need to stop
pointing fingers and to develop a
"Made in Huron" solution to water
quality problems. The coalition has
formed working committees which
are developing action plans, in the
areas of education/communica-
tions, research, watershed planning,
funding and incentives, and
environmental watch and
mediation.
The next meeting of the Coalition
is Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at the
Health Unit auditorium at the
Huronview Complex in Clinton. A
highlight of the meeting is the
presentation of a report on Surface
Water Data Collection and
Analysis by Professor Doug Joy
and Shelly Bonte-Gelok of Guelph
University. They have been
undertaking a study of historic
water quality data in the County
with the aim of establishing
baseline conditions and identifying
problem watercourses. This study
was sponsored by the Huron
County Environmental Farm
Coalition.
Evert Ridder, a co-chair of
Surface Water Coalition expects
that "the results of this study will
establish the need for more
information, set priorities for
certain areas, and will allow us to
approach various levels of
government with a funding request,
that is supported by scientific data
outlining the seriousness of water
pollution problems throughout the
county."
