The Citizen, 1999-02-10, Page 19Novice ’Dogs play for fun Il was two wins and a lie for the Blyih Novice B Bulldogs when lhey competed in a fun tournament in Howick this past weekend. In their first game on Friday the team took on Milverton and came away with a 7-1 victory. Kendall Whitfield scored two unassisted shots in the first to pul Blyth up 2-0. Byron Broome then set up Brittany Peters, who bulged the twine one more time for lhe 'Dogs. With 27 seconds left in the period Tony Bean widened the gap with a blast between the pipes. Goalie Anthony Peters never fal­ tered, keeping Milverton off the board through lhe second, while his teammate Derek Youngblut lit the light for the fifth time. Bean used the third period to score a hattrick with two goals in less than a minute, Nicholas Carter finally put Mil­ verton on the board with just 38 seconds left in lhe game. The competition Sunday was stiffer for lhe 'Dogs' second match­ up against Oakville.Whitfield got it started early in the first, but two goals in the last few minutes for their opponent gave them a one- Lightning wins another Walkerton's Bantams TK's Deli and Pizzeria invited Saugeen Maitland Lightning PeeWees for a rematch this past Sunday in Walkerton. A low slap from the point through traffic by Jackie Zacher, just squeezed past TK's, Ashley Turcotte to put the Lightning on the board early in the game. Brittany Campbell and Michelle Cook picked up assists with their efforts on the play. Less than a minute later, Jen Weber intercepted a clearing pass and rifled one into the comer to knot the score at one. The Walkerton girls efforts paid dividends when Christine Fortney drilled one though the five hole on passes from Sara Snyder and Holly Kuntz to edge into the lead. The trio to Zacher, Cook and Campbell put to rest the old adage "Lightning never strikes twice" when another low shot by Zacher was redirected off the TK's defence's skate into the Novices double Goderich The Blyth Novice B Bulldogs Local League squad doubled their Goderich opponent in their Feb. 4 contest. Curtis Robertson scored in the second, with an assist by McClinchey, before Howick got on the board, with what was to be their only goal of the game. Blyth widened the margin before lhe buzzer sounded when Derek Youngblut bulged the twine with helpers to Whitfield and McClinchey. It was three in lhe third for Blyth putting the game out of reach for Howick. Scoring were Byron Broome, Robertson and McDowell, with assists to Lee Watkins and Roman Sturzenegger. comer and tie the game a scant 13 seconds later. In the second period the teams battled it out with fast, physical end-to-end play. Both teams had their chances but strong play by TK's Turcotte and Saugeen's Nicky Berfelz in net kept the period scoreless at two apiece. After a short rest during flood between periods, with their batteries recharged, the action was fast with both teams pressing. Midway into the period, set up by Katie Whytock and Cook, Jessica Mann was able to walk in from the point and fire a wrist shot high into the net. Saugeen added another a few minutes later when Brittany Kellington fed the puck to Heather Walker, who broke around the defence and picked the top comer. Playing in net for the last period, Brook Wheeler gobbled up anything sent her way and held off a strong effort by TK's to retain the 4-2 win. A shot by Johnathon McDowell at 12:52 of the second put the Bull­ dogs up 3-0 before Goderich's Jor­ don Smith got on the board. McClinchcy earned the assist. The visitors pulled closer when Adam Jenkins pushed one over the line at 6:17 of the third. However, a solo effort by Tony Bean pul Blyth up 4-2 to seal the win. Blyth goals were scored by Jeremy Austin (two) and Matt Anderson (two) assisted by Craig Marks, Derek Cook, Scott Austin and Jeff Carter. Clifford hosts the next two games. Although disappointed with the loss the coaches trust the Bulldogs will play a more physically challenging level of hockey. Giving it his all Despite solid efforts like this to keep the puck out of the net, the Blyth Midget Bulldogs couldn’t pull out a win at home Sunday against Lion's Head and dropped behind one game to two in playoff series action. (Mark Nonkes photo) Midgets down 2 games to 1 After taking the first game of their WOAA final series, the Blyth Bulldog Midget team has dropped the next two games to Lion's Head. On Friday night, the Midgets travelled to Lion’s Head and after a see-saw battle lost 9-7. Blyth led 5- 3 early in the second frame, but Lion's Head stormed back with four unanswered goals to lead 7-5. Blyth got one back late in the second and tied the score in the first minute of the third period. This was a low scoring game with Lion’s Head Nomination Deadline March 31, 1999 Name and phone number of nominator | Brussels coming out on top by a 3-1 margin. Lion's Head scored in each period with Blyth finally getting on the scoresheet with 1:44 to play. Blyth pulled the goalie for the extra man but could get no closer. McLellan scored for Blyth with assists going to Arthur and K. Anderson. Game four of the series is in Lion's Head Friday night at 8:30 p.m. with the fifth game if necessary back in Blyth Sunday at 3 p.m.
