Melanie and Kevin of Biyth had originally planned to wed in Las Vegas, but after some family input, decided that if they were to marry anywhere in Canada, it would be only one place. It would be on the vacant lot which had once been the site of Kevin's Aunt Marg Caldwell's home. When Melanie and her children moved into the home, Kevin had promised his aunt that he would look after it. Unfortunately, the house was razed by fire last March, the same day his aunt passed away in hospital. "I never got to say I was sorry," says Kevin. As events transpired for the couple to wed in Biyth, they decided to have an impromptu ceremony at the vacant lot the day before they had planned to fly out. Only the minister knew in advance what the couple had planned. Though a few guests from a greater distance were called the night before, local attendants and grandparents were called at 9:30 a.m., Saturday morning. The wedding took place at 1 1 a.m. Unfortunately for the Grosses, some family members were7unable to make it to Biyth in time and others were upset that they had not been forewarned. However, they were able to have the small intimate wedding they had hoped for. If they had done things the traditional way, they felt there could have easily been 500 people at the occasion. The ceremony was somewhat disorganized as there had been no rehearsal. A relaxed barbecue was held at the home of Kevin's grandmother after the service. The couple would not recommending hold a wedding on such short notice. LET US MAKE YOUR DAY A SPECIAL ONE! Dressmaker creates bride’s style Last year, women spent more than $1.8 billion on bridal gowns. With the ever-rising cost of planning a wedding, many brides find it extremely difficult to stay within their budgets, especially when it comes to purchasing a wedding gown. One way to take control of the situation without having to make any creative sacrifices is to hire a dressmaker. Unlike buying at retail, a dressmaker is able to sew the bride's dream dress using materials that stay within the bride's budget. A dressmaker also has the necessary sewing skills and experience needed to create the bride's fantasy dress, allowing her to concentrate on other aspects of the wedding. Additionally, a skilled seamstress will be able to combine the bride's ideas with the perfect fabric and silhouette, guaranteeing her the fit, color and fabric that she desires. Before hiring a dressmaker, you should determine what style of gown best flatters your shape. To do this, try on several different styles of dresses at a bridal retail store. This also will give you a better idea as to what the different fabrics look like and how they drape on your body. The Sewing Fashion Council offers the following tips: • Make sure that the dressmaker is recommended by several reliable sources, such as a fine fabric store, tailor, dry cleaner and, best of all, a satisfied customer. • Before hiring a dressmaker, make an appointment to meet with him. Ask to see samples of his work and for client references and phone numbers. • Ask the dressmaker if he has experience in sewing wedding gowns. Wedding gowns use special fabrics in special ways. • Ask yourself if this is someone you can communicate with. Your rapport with the dressmaker is just as important as the quality of the work. Can he envision exactly what you want? Remember, you'll be spending a lot of time together on this project. • Ask if the dressmaker will FREE BRIDAL CONSULTATION When you book your Wedding Day Appointment with us. A good dressmaker will do all of the above, although he may require an additional fee for the shopping service. • Choosing a dressmaker strictly by price is a mistake. A fine dressmaker is a skilled professional and his price reflects experience, design and sewing skills, a sophisticated fashion sense and an enormous investment of time. • Make sure that the price estimate is based upon the pattern and fabric you've selected and Continued on page 12 ^our ‘Wedding ‘Deserves Our Speciat‘Touch Look your bridal best for the most important day of your life. 482-7711 72 Albert Street, Clinton z No Wedding would be complete without decorations Add balloon bouquets, balloon arches, paper decorations including, streamers, bells & hearts to your reception hall decor.
