The Citizen, 1999-02-10, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1999. Brussels council briefs * The restructuring draft report with Grey Twp is coming along nicely, said Brussels Clerk-Treasur er Donna White at the Feb. 1 met ing of council. White and her Grey counterpart, Brad Knight, have met with fire chiefs and road superintendents and have tried to outline options for council's consideration. They hope to have the report ready for a joint meeting of the two councils on Feb. 15 at Grey. Reeve Ralph Watson said that he and Robin Dunbar, the reeve of Grey have discussed the idea of a meeting with staff. "We feel a ses sion with employees would be a good idea," said Watson.♦♦♦ Sale of bag tags has brought in S3,500. One of the businesses where they are being sold requested a commis sion and asked that they not have to pay up front for the tags. Council agreed to the latter but were emphatic that no commission would be paid. "They can sell them for more. Were not going to pay them, or we'll be paying others," said Councillor Mary Stretton.♦ ♦♦ Stretton, the Community Policing Committee rep, gave an update on the Citizens on Patrol. She said she had 29 signed to the program, many of whom had returned their applications.♦ ** White spoke to county engineer Sandra Lawson about a parking bylaw. She said that Brussels would have to ask the county for permission to enforce the parking along the problem section and the county will not Qnforcc the bylaw. Someone would have to be desig nated by the village to issue tickets, the revenue of which would go to Brussels. Also, the OPP arc aware of the problem and have been informed that should they sec vehicles parked illegally they arc to ask them to move. No ticket will be issued, White said. Traffic cones are being pur chased for the crossing guards. Brock Voddcn attended the meet ing to discuss the Business Partner ship for Job Creation. The.idea is to make people aerbss the county aware of the program and encourage participation. Prompted by a concent over the Huron economy, the idea is to gen erate ideas that would stimulate business growth and job creation. Voddcn will be speaking at a meeting with the local business community as well.*♦* Notice has been received from the Ministry of the Environment Continued on page 39 4 Happy 60th > ] Mom [ We want to wish Joan F Jacobs a happy 60th on J February 1st. A letter of request from a Winnipeg cousin and a phone call from Juanita Smith got me thinking of "the good old days" - HA! I got out my trusty Morris Twp. book of 1981 and thanks to Jeanne Kirkby's good work I was able to get the requested information for Marg on its way. A little tidbit from that book - did you know a group called The Sage Girls entertained in Walton in 1893? And you thought The Spice Girls were original - ah history. Chatting to Juanita about nursing and her new counselling business we strayed to The Brussels Post and The Kansas Farmer, Juanita's grandpa. He wrote just before I came to Brussels, but I can remember folks getting a little irritated with him. So Juanita lent me some of his 1960’s columns to read - oh my! Johnnie didn't miss much, especially the business of organization. The Legion, the fair board and especially village council got the inky side of his pen. He liked to mention individuals, Ivan Campbell, Lenord Lamont and Bid Bell were favourite targets and I'm sure they were each capable of returning his insults. Derek Raymond from the Butcher Shop and Archer Grewar were two more names that brought back good memories of the old Brussels that Thynne wrote about. I grew up in Morris Twp. with four brothers, the third one arrived on Valentine's Day. I was not impressed - I did not want another brother and especially not on my birthday. It seems I let the world know my opinion as I ended the day with four birthday cakes, to compensate for the lack of a female baby! Mom baked one before she left to deliver Clif. Dad bought one at the bake shop in Wingham. Dorthy Thornton made one while I stayed with her until Dad returned and Ruby Sanderson, the baby housekeeper, brought one with her. All to pacify a five-year-old. It worked as I still love birthdays. If you're looking for birthday cake on Feb. 14 sing to Jack Cardiff and Ken Graber and I'm sure they will oblige . They're aging fast. Bye now, Betty. In honour of Groundhog Day, Bridgette Cucksey (standing) visited Huronlea in Brussels with her pet hedgehog, Coconut Cream Donut, giving residents the opportunity to play with the prickly creature. Bea Hallahan was a little hesitant to touch as he seemed to be in a nippy mood. st0 i ) everyone for your overwhelming support last weekend. We apologize for the delays.
