Fall is here again and with it
comes our 71st annual fowl supper.
For all the newcomers to the
community and also to remind those
who have helped for years, the
supper started in 1949 and each year
over 1,000 people sit down together
at the same time, over a traditional
hot turkey supper with the whole
community contributing time and
food to make this supper a huge
success.
The proceeds go toward the
operating costs of the Belgrave
Community Centre, arena and park
and sponsor minor sports programs
throughout the year. Without the
fowl supper these areas might
close.
Tickets are available at our local
stores.Over 150 United Church Women
from the Western Ontario
Waterways (WOW) newly-formed
Region 8 met in the Mount Forest
United Church for their first annual
celebration. WOW now takes in
women from Huron-Perth, Bruce,
Grey and Waterloo former
conferences. The WOW Staff
Liason is Kathy Douglas.
Interim Chairperson Anne Reuber
of Stratford, welcomed everyone
and spoke of how this region had
been formed and introduced interim
steering committee women who had
met several times to make the plans
for that day.
Following a social time and lively
sing-song, Ann introduced Rev.
Gary Clark, the chair of the whole
WOW Region 8. He spoke of the
many achievements of United
Church Women and how the local
churches depend on the women now
serving in various capacities of their
churches. As Kathy Douglas was
unable to attend, Gary led in some
light exercises.
The National United Church
President, Mrs. Beulah Hayley of
Newfoundland, was guest speaker
for the day. Her theme was,
“Walking in the Holy Spirit’s
Power”. She provided humorous
examples of her life, telling of being
raised on a small island with about
25- residents. As she progressed
through school, and university, she
had many struggles, but every time
she knew the Holy Spirit was with
her. Even being told she had a brain
tumor, she had faith in the Holy
Spirit and it was benign. When she
was nominated to be the national
president, she also had concerns, but
when her husband said, “Yes – you
should do that”, she knew the Holy
Spirit was with her then too.
She spoke again, after lunch and a
sing-song, this time sharing some of
her thoughts of the National United
Church women who had a week-
long executive meeting, just prior to
this day. The National Mission
Project will be for the next few years
to the year 2022, when the UCW
will celebrate their 60th anniversary
in Nova Scotia. The offering taken
after her address raised over $1,8700
and was given to the anniversary
project. The offering was taken up
by four members of the Belgrave
UCW.
Rev. Cheryl Ann Stadelbauer
Sampa, the WOW Regional
Executive Minister, was invited to
speak and then lead in Communion.
She spoke of the past history of
women who have been so dedicated
to the work of the UCW and church
attendance, and how times have
changed. Families who raised their
children going to church find that it
is not something this generation has
as a priority. She gave many
examples of changes in the world
that will affect the young people of
today, and many dangers of the
society as a whole.
The Belgrave Community Centre
Board held a special celebration on
Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the centre in
recognition of the late Jim McGee.
Many family, friends and
community members were present
as Mrs. Chris McGee received a
trophy, as Jim had been nominated
as the volunteer of the year by the
board. Chairperson Jonathan Van
Camp welcomed everyone there and
spoke of all the volunteer work Jim
had done over the years with sports,
family and the community centre.
Kim Higgins presented the award to
Chris and unveiled the trophy plaque
on the wall with Jim’s name on it.
Jim’s son Rob then thanked the
community and the board for the
honour it had bestowed on his dad.
A social time followed and
everyone shared stories of Jim,
taking pictures of the family and the
award. After the celebration the
board continued with its regular
annual general meeting.
