Home run derby to
return for festival
Cowbell wins bronze
Tigers narrowly miss title
Another feather
Over the weekend, the Brussels Tigers added another feather to their cap with a silver medal
performance at the Ontario Challenge Cup in Hickson. The Tigers made it to the finals, running
through the competition undefeated, but ran into the Innerkip Eagles and lost by a score of 14-
9, just missing out on the prestigious title. (Submitted photo)
Blyth resident Dalton Richmond
wants to revive a home run derby for
the upcoming Blyth Rutabaga
Festival thanks to fond memories of
the event.
Richmond, a lifelong resident of
the village and member of the Fire
Department of North Huron’s Blyth
Hall, said he had talked to several
locals who reminisced about a
derby, saying he wasn’t sure what
event it was attached to, but felt it
would make a good addition to the
upcoming revival of the Rutabaga
Festival on Oct. 5.
While he had originally been
considering a full-fledged baseball
tournament, he didn’t know if he
could find the kind of commitment
necessary to run such an involved
event, and felt that something a little
less intense would be more likely to
succeed the first year.
To that end, the derby won’t
require pre-registration, just for
batters to arrive and sign up at 1:45
p.m. with the derby starting at 2 p.m.
The derby will welcome batters to
swing at five pitches for $5,
Richmond said. There will be a 90-
minute open round, in which batters
can sign up as many times as they
like for $5 for each at-bat, followed
by a 15-minute playoff round with
the top two batters hitting off for the
championship.
“I think it will get competitive
with people able to buy back in,” he
said. “That way we can make sure
everyone has the chance to do their
best and put up their best numbers.”
To ensure consistency, Richmond
said, the derby will feature a
pitching machine from Blyth Minor
Baseball to keep the event as fair as
possible.
The winner will receive $100 cash
and a trophy. Richmond added that
more prizes may also be offered at
the event.
The derby is being sponsored by
M.G.M. Townsend Tire, located just
outside of Londesborough and run
by FDNH Deputy-Chief Matt
Townsend.

Pale American Ale category.
Overflow Brewing Company’s
Bangkok Crosswalk won silver and

Limited’s Farmer’s Daughter took
home the gold in that category.

four runs to win the game.
The squad then faced off against
the Wiarton Nationals, winning by a
score of 4-1 to move on to the finals
against the Innerkip Eagles, who
played through the consolation
bracket to earn their chance at the
gold.
“Wiarton was able to score one in
the top of the first, but, the Tigers
answered back with three of their
own in the first and another in the
second to make it 4-1,” Daw said.
Brussels native Ty Sebastian was
named most valuable pitcher for the
tournament, entering the finals with
four wins and 53 strikeouts over 27
innings. Sebastian also helped rally
the offence for the Tigers.
The Tigers made their way into
the tournament by capturing gold in
Mitchell the previous weekend at
the Huron County Fastball League
year-end tournament. It’s the fourth
time in the last five years the Tigers
have won the Huron County
tournament.

The sin before us is a very old one!
(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)
“Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among
them.” Luke 22:24
We see in this passage how firmly pride and love of preeminence can stick to the hearts
of Christian men. The strife was one which had been rebuked by our Lord on a former
occasion. The Lord’s Supper which the disciples had just been receiving, and the
circumstances under which they were assembled – made the strife particularly
inappropriate.
And yet at this very season, the last quiet time they could spend with their Master
before His death – this little flock begins to argue among themselves about who would
be the greatest!
Such is the heart of man – ever weak, ever prideful, ever ready, even at its best times,
to turn aside to what is evil!
The sin before us is a very old one. Ambition, self-esteem, and self-conceit – lie deep
at the bottom of all men’s hearts, and often in the hearts there they are least suspected!
Thousands imagine that they are humble, who cannot bear to see an equal more
honoured and favoured than themselves. Few indeed can be found who rejoice heartily
in another’s promotion over themselves.
If we make any profession of serving Christ, then let us live on our guard against this
great evil. The harm that it has done to the Church of Christ, is far beyond calculation.
Let us learn to take pleasure in the prosperity of others, and to be content with the
lowest place for ourselves. The rule given to the Philippians should be often before our
eyes, “In lowliness of mind – let each esteem others better than themselves. “The
example of John the Baptist is a bright instance of the spirit at which we should aim.
He said of our Lord, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Officially launched
The Brussels Fairy Door Trail officially launched on Sunday thanks to the efforts of Terry Gray,
Zoey Onn and the Brussels Horticultural Society. Plenty of fans both young and old were on
hand to check out the newly-printed map, while some real-life fairies also made an
appearance. Hudson Ross Hastie, left, and Alexis White, centre, took some time out of their
day to meet the Fairy Godmothers, who closely resemble local residents. (Hannah Dickie photo)
