In response to a county-wide economic development update, North Huron Reeve Bernie Bailey wants his staff and constituents to know that one of council’s highest priorities is addressing the labour shortage in the Wingham area. On Sept. 3, Bailey, in response to a report on economic development issues in June and July, said that he and Chief Administrative Officer Dwayne Evans have been working diligently to try and find solutions for the labour shortage. The report, compiled by the Huron County Economic Development Department, indicated that Wescast Inc. has moved production of a new line to its Wingham machine shop, resulting in a need for more than 50 new employees. “While this is wonderful news for the community and the economy, the tight labour market has made it difficult for the company to find and hire new employees,” the report states. “The [Huron County Economic Development Department] has facilitated meetings between employers and the community to generate ideas for short-term solutions, and has also been active in raising the issue with local and regional media.” Bailey said that North Huron Council and staff have been active in seeking solutions to the issue. “Dwayne and I have been at the table for this since day one,” he said. “We’ve put a lot of time and North Huron has put a lot of time into this even though only one of the factories involved is in North Huron.” Bailey said that private industries are working towards solutions, but there are problems, specifically with housing. He said his contacts at Wescast say the company has reached out to the London and Kitchener areas to try and recruit employees, but having a stock of affordable homes for people in such positions is an ongoing concern.
