Joudry said the department is happy to help North Huron, but no, the department couldn’t be sending out representatives to every meeting in Huron County. MacLellan, while defending the buy-in policy, said he wasn’t surprised to see “eyebrows go up” when that was discussed. However, if the county wants a consistent system in place from the north end of the county to south and everywhere in between, he said, consistency is a must. Bluewater Mayor Paul Klopp, however, was not pleased with the proposal at all, saying he was “embarrassed” it had been presented to him. He also said that the lengthy consultation process with economic development professionals was “not how you do business”, though numerous councillors would disagree with him. Ginn said the system was developed with the help of the Huron County Economic Development Board, which includes numerous private business professionals. When those business owners tell the county what they want, Ginn said, the department should be listening and implementing those systems. Klopp disagreed, especially when it came to the opt-in clause, saying it felt as though the department was “holding taxpayers ransom” to justify their new strategy. MacLellan said he was proud of the department establishing a roadmap that can be used throughout the county by both seasoned veterans and new employees. He also said the system will provide information on return on investment, which can be so elusive when it comes to economic development initiatives. Central Huron Deputy-Mayor Dave Jewitt agreed, saying that while it isn’t perfect, he thought the system was a good first step. Joudry reiterated his stance that the county would not attempt to divert business from municipalities if they choose not to opt-in, but said the system is aiming to create a standard across the county. Bailey came to the defence of the department, saying there are plenty of good ideas in the system report, but that he would like to see the department go back to the drawing board and incorporate some of council’s concerns and suggestions into a second draft. Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Mayor Glen McNeil said he was concerned about the lack of proactive methods in the strategy. He said so many of the systems depend on an investor coming to Huron County ready to spend money. He wanted to ensure the department was also going out and working to attract business to the county and Joudry said that’s definitely happening as well. Council accepted the report, but didn’t adopt it, leaving it in limbo to be re-presented to council at a later date. The Brussels Tigers have once again captured the Huron County Fastball League championship after a very close final game against the Belmore Sting on Sunday. In the championship game of the year-end tournament in Mitchell, they beat Belmore, requiring nine innings to secure the 5-4 victory. “We started strong, getting two runs in the first inning,” Tigers’ Shawn Daw said. “We added a couple more through the game, as did Belmore. In the sixth inning, Belmore found two more to tie the game.” The win marked the Tigers’ fourth championship in five years. To earn their way into the finals, the Tigers blanked Belmore 4-0, bested the Milverton AW Millwrights 6-4, and opened the tournament with a tight 5-4 game against the hometown Mitchell Mets. “The team played well with just a few hiccups along the way,” Daw said. “Pitching kept us in the games and the bats finished the job.” The entire season was a success Daw said, thanks to the dedication of players and the support of fans. “We had some younger players step up and fill in for us when we were short guys,” he said. “The fan support drives us to continue to get better and play to the best of our abilities.” Daw said that fan dedication was on display all season long, including when some made the trek to Mitchell to support the Tigers. This weekend, the Tigers will travel to the Ontario Challenge Cup in Innerkip to represent the Huron County Fastball League. “[The cup] is a tournament where the best from each Ontario league competes for a berth in the International Softball Congress World Tournament,” Daw said. The Tigers start the tournament with a 7 p.m. game against the Hickston Astros on Sept. 13. Coaching system in limbo Tigers claim fourth league title in five years Dynasty With four Huron County Fastball League titles in the last five years, it’s safe to declare the Brussels Tigers a dynasty. It wasn’t easy for the Tigers at the year-end tournament in Mitchell, as they won two of their four games by one run and another by just two. They triumphed over the Belmore Sting on Sunday in the championship game by a score of 5-4 in extra innings. It was Ty Sebastian, right, who scored the winning run in the ninth as he was welcomed home by Andrew Baker, left, and Dennis Dewar.
