(Mark Nonkes photo) Flyers split games with Irish in pre-season action The Goderich Flyers posted a 1-1 record last week, bringing the squad’s pre-season record to 3-1. On Friday, Sept. 6, the Flyers were edged out in a high-scoring 7-5 affair by the Lucan Irish just days after the Flyers had posted a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against the Irish. Goderich started scoring early with Colton Quipp (Monkton) notching an unassisted goal one minute into the first. Several minutes later, Lucan evened the game. Eric Vander Eyk (Stratford) put Goderich back on top with a power play marker assisted by Trent Michie of Belgrave and Parker Gibbings of Auburn at 11:20 in the first. Lucan responded before the end of the period, then earned the only goal of the second period with a power play marker just over one minute in. The third period saw Goderich open strong with Kincardine’s Ethan Long earning a power play goal assisted by Quipp and Michie, tying the game. Michie would go on to score a shorthanded goal assisted by Londesborough’s Cody Treble, giving Goderich the lead. In response, Lucan scored three unanswered goals before Gibbings and Michie would assist Long’s second goal of the game. Lucan had the last word, however, with an empty-net goal with less than a minute left in the game. Goderich outshot Lucan 40-37 in the match. Goaltending responsiblities for the Flyers were shared by Jarron Thompson and Jarrod Flemming, with Thompson playing 25 minutes and stopping 14 of 17 shots. Flemming stopped 16 of 19 shots. Goderich was issued 70 minutes of penalties on 22 calls, while Lucan incurred 16 infractions totalling 40 minutes. On Sept. 3, Goderich bested the Irish 4-3 in overtime. The game saw Lucan and Goderich trading goals, starting with Lucan earning the only marker of the first period. Gibbings opened scoring for Goderich at the start of the second with an unassisted goal. Lucan responded just under five minutes later with a power play goal, before Gibbings struck once again, this time assisted by Long and Griffin MacDonald of Bayfield. Lucan responded later in the period, again on the power play. In the third, Long earned a power play marker for Goderich, forcing overtime. Seaforth’s Jeff Fritzley earned the game-winning overtime goal with an assist from Benmiller’s Mitchell Fisher. Goderich served 34 minutes over nine penalties. Lucan served four minor penalties worth eight minutes. The Flyers’ Bobby McLachlin and Spencer Lazarevich traded goaltending duties with Lazarevich earning the win, stopping 26 of 27 shots. McLachlin saved 17 of 19. The Wingham Ironmen started their pre-season with a 2-1 record, splitting games with Lucan and besting Exeter. On Sunday, the Ironmen posted a convincing 7-3 win over the Lucan Irish, outshooting the Irish 40-19. The only marker of the first period went to Wingham’s Rhys Vollmer, assisted by Chase Meurs and Kyle Standbury. The Ironmen opened the second with Hayden Robinson earning a shorthanded goal seven seconds in to the period. Lucan responded with two goals, tying the game before Wingham marked four unanswered goals to finish the second. First, Chris Adlys found the back of the net with assists from Logan Tolton and Dana Smith. Carter Colinson earned a power play marker with an assist from Meurs, and Vollmer earned his second of the game assisted by Kyle Standbury and Dawson Fahrer. Finally, Standbury earned his own power play goal, assisted by Vollmer. Lucan started the third with a goal, but Vollmer and the Ironmen would have the last word, with Vollmer earning a hat trick with assists from Standbury and Colson Fischer. Wingham served five penalties totalling 10 minutes while Lucan was penalized for 20 minutes on six infractions. Wingham’s goaltender Devin Carson played the entire 60 minutes for the Ironmen, earning the win and stopping 16 of 19 shots.
