Locals shine as Flyers earn two preseason wins
The Goderich Junior C Flyers, a
squad that is drawing heavily on
communities in central and northern
Huron, started off its pre-season with
two victories over the Kincardine
Bulldogs, who finished third last
year.
On Aug. 29, Goderich posted a 7-3
home win against Kincardine at the
Maitland Valley Recreation Centre.
Parker Gibbing of Auburn started
Goderich’s drive in the lopsided
contest, marking the only goal in the
first period, assisted by Trent Michie
of Belgrave.
Kincardine evened the score with
an early goal in the second period,
however two power play goals
would see Goderich leave the period
with a sizable lead. Ethan Long
(Kincardine) marked the first with
an assist from Eric Vander Eyk
(Stratford).
Gibbing earned the last marker of
the second with assists from Kyle
Langlois (Goderich) and Jeff
Fritzley (Seaforth).
The scoreboard was lit up in the
third with six goals between the two
teams. Goderich started off strong
with a pair of goals scored by
Brayden Parent (Goderich). His first
marker was assisted by Matt Bean
(Goderich) while Vander Eyk helped
on the second.
Kincardine scored next with a goal
at 13:16, but the Flyers responded
within eight seconds as Cody Treble
of Londesborough earned a goal
with the help of Langlois.
Kincardine earned another goal but
it wouldn’t be enough as Langlois
earned a power play marker at the
end of the third, with an assist from
Vander Eyk, to end the game.
Between the two teams 60 minutes
of penalties were racked up over 19
offences. Goderich served 28
minutes on eight infractions while
Kincardine served 36 on 11 calls.
In the first period, Kincardine
earned a high sticking call early on,
followed by Michie and Gibbing
earning roughing after the whistle
calls on the same play.
The second period saw plenty of
traffic at the penalty box with
Kincardine earning a cross checking
call 21 seconds into the period,
followed by an illegal equipment,
10-minute misconduct call.
Vander Eyk saw the box next, with
two minutes for slashing.
Kincardine earned a tripping call,
followed by Parent earning goalie
interference, taking him out of
action for two minutes.
Ten seconds later, Kincardine
earned the same call, followed by
Jack Stecho of Goderich being
called for cross checking.
One Kincardine player’s game
ended early with a game checking
from behind misconduct, which also
earned his team two minutes of
playing short handed.
Several minutes later, Langlois,
alongside a Kincardine player
earned 10-minute misconducts for
inciting an opponent. As part of the
same play, Kincardine also received
two two-minute penalties for
roughing and high sticking,
respectively.
Before the puck had dropped in
the third, Parent earned an
unsportsmanlike conduct call,
followed by a holding the stick call
later in the period.
Kincardine earned the last penalty
of the game, a two-minute tripping
minor.
Goderich’s goaltenders Jarrod
Flemming and Bobby McLachlin
split the game evenly, with
Flemming facing 12 shots and
saving 11 and McLachlin facing 16
and saving 14. Goderich outshot
Kincardine 36-28 in the game.
On Aug. 21, Goderich earned a 6-
3 road win over Kincardine.
Kincardine outshot Goderich 33-
24 over three periods, but the Flyers’
goalies, Spencer Lazarevich and
Thompson held the team in the game
with Lazarevich posting a shutout
over 29 and a half minutes of play
and Thompson stopping 12 of 15
shots for the rest of the game.
Goderich started out strong, with
Nolan Gagnier of Varna notching a
goal in the first, assisted by Parent
and Fritzley. Goderich kept the goals
coming, with Gagnier earning a
power play marker early in the
second, assisted by Bean and
Langlois.
Michie earned Goderich’s third
goal off a pass from Gibbing.
Kincardine struck back with their
own power play goal, before
Gibbing extended Goderich’s lead to
4-1 at the end of the second with a
goal assisted by Ethan (Kincardine)
and Michie.
The Flyers came out swinging in
the third with Londesborough’s
Chad Treble earning an early goal
assisted by Cody Treble and Nick
Mandeno (Owen Sound).
Kincardine earned two more
markers, bringing the score to 5-3,
but Langlois earned another
insurance marker for the Flyers with
a power play goal assisted by
Gibbing and Bean.
Both teams spent plenty of time in
the box with Goderich earning 24
minutes in the sin bin over eight
infractions and Kincardine netting
22 minutes on seven infractions.
Both teams started the game off on
the wrong foot with 10-minute
misconducts awarded for warm up
violations to goaltenders Caden
Prues of Kincardine and Lazarevich.
Both goalies were reprimanded for
standing beside the net during the
singing of “O’ Canada” instead of in
the crease.
After the puck drop, Kincardine
earned two minutes for holding just
over two minutes into the game.
Gagnier went to the box next for a
two-minute holding infraction
followed by Gibbing later in the
period with a two-minute hooking
call.
Kincardine finished out the first
with a two-minute interference
penalty.
The second period saw Kincardine
earn an interference penalty before
Goderich’s Langlois earned a two-
minute roughing after the whistle
call.
Kincardine went to the box for
kneeing before Michie and Cole
McKee had consecutive two-minute
hooking calls.
The Flyers’ Avery Timmermans of
Zurich was handed a two-minute
penalty at the end of the second for
leaving the players’ bench.
The third period saw Kincardine
earn interference and tripping
penalties, both two minutes, book-
ending a two-minute high sticking
call against Goderich’s Gibbing.
The Flyers took on Lucan at home
on Sept. 3 at the Goderich Maitland
Recreation Centre, but a score was
unavailable at press time.
The team will face off against
Lucan again on the road on Friday,
Sept. 6 with puck-drop scheduled for
7:45 p.m.
