The Citizen, 2019-09-05, Page 6PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2019. At the Branch ‘Catch the Ace’ praised, draws set to return Sept. 27 By Jo-Ann McDonald The week at the Brussels Legion Branch began with the executive meeting for August being held on Tuesday evening. There were 11 members in attendance. The first topic discussed was the dues for the 2019/2020 year. There have been no changes to what is owed to Command from our dues so the executive felt fees could stay the same as last year. Comrades paying their dues in September, October and November will pay $50 and their name will be entered into the early bird draw with a name pulled each month. The winner will receive their next year’s dues for free. After Dec. 1, the fees will go to $55. The membership stickers are at the Branch, so drop in after Sept. 1 and pay your dues. The Branch welcomes new members any time. Drop in and pick up an application and join the Legion today. The Branch will host the Zone C1 convention on Sept. 15 and discussions were held on what needs to be done. Flagbearers are needed, a parade will be held, meals required, guests invited, plus more. Many executive members stepped up to volunteer to do some of the jobs required. President Jamie Mitchell gave a report on the fall council meeting he attended at the Seaforth Branch last week. He received some very positive remarks on how the Branch handled the Catch the Ace draw as it neared the end and felt other Branches may follow our example. Catch the Ace returns with the first draw on Sept. 27 at 7:15 p.m. Tickets will be available in early September. Look for tickets at some of the same retail outlets like Brussels Bulk and Bargain, the Jam Jar and of course, the Brussels Legion. New retail outlets will be McDonald Home Hardware and Brussels Variety. We are still confirming the Walton location. There will be a few changes about sales and they will be posted at each sales point. Look for more information next week. President Jamie attended the district sports meeting and the Branch will host team zone darts in December. Also under sports, the Branch will host two days of Huron County darts this winter. The track and field report had an update on Ryan Jacklin and his great success at the national championships in Nova Scotia. The Branch has always supported Ryan and voted to give him a donation. We normally would have done it at the July meeting but the meeting was cancelled. Better late than never and we congratulate Ryan on his success and wish him well in his next venture. The catering committee has 17 food events scheduled for the 2019/2020 year at this point. The fish fry committee has five more events to finish the year for a total of 21 in 2019. The house committee reports that the paving has been done and the MBC has painted the maple leaf in the sidewalk design and it looks great. The entertainment committee has booked “A Johnny Cash Experience” show for Nov. 22, so save the draw date on your calendars. The Cadets will host an open house on Sept. 3 and they hope to have more young people come out to learn about Cadets. Posters have bee put up around town. If you miss the open house, you will be welcomed to drop in any Tuesday evening from 6:30 - 9 p.m. to learn about the Corp. Youth ages 12-18 are welcome to join Cadets and it is absolutely free. I spoke to a mother who has a daughter who is starting her fifth year in the Brussels Cadet Corp 2967. I asked her what kept her coming back to the Corp and what she really enjoyed about it. Meaghan den Dekker has embraced the Cadet Corp and credits the leaders and program for building her self confidence, teaching her discipline and to strengthen her independence. Over the course of the last four years as a Cadet, she has learned survival skills, team building, experienced outdoor camping and the acceptance of others. Meaghan has had the opportunity to attend Camp Borden three times. The first year was a two-week general training camp. Getting to know new friends and learning to work together. The second year was a three-week expedition where the group hiked, biked, canoed and camped off-base in a different spot each night. Her third year attending was for a six-week program to train for a fitness sports instructor. She also worked and achieved her First Aid certificate along with learning to play sports and exercise properly. She now will bring what she learned back to the Brussels Corp to share and use on their monthly sports nights. At each of these camps, Meaghan was paid daily to attend and she is thankful for the opportunity because of being a member of the Brussels Cadet Corp. She had made many new friendships with people from all over Ontario that she keeps in contact with. A special event for the group was going to a Blue Jays game in Toronto this year. Meaghan urges youth to come out and join the Brussels Cadet Corp. You will experience weekly meetings, camping weekends, volunteering to help others, and a great year-end trip and all at no expense. Meaghan will be too old to be a Cadet next year, but she hopes to stay on as a volunteer with the Corp and attend Camp Borden as a staff member next year. Congratulations to Meaghan on her commitment and dedication to the Brussels Cadet Corp and for sharing her story with all of us; all positive qualities and achievements to carry with her through life. I’m doing a happy dance. Weston Nicholas Graber has arrived. He came a touch early, so a nice surprise for Phil and Lauren. Great news for me as I hadn’t yet got near to the worry time. So as a bonus, with technology last Thursday I could see that Lauren was fine and Weston looked like a proper three-hour-old baby. So, all is well in Edmonton. Now Hark and Wes will be a fun pair to watch grow. Life certainly is interesting. Talking to my brothers and sharing the good news of Weston, we commented on the fact that Ontario has sent forth and blessed Alberta with brand new Hetheringtons and Grabers, now numbering 10 (eight boys and two girls) in the past six years. So you never know what’s going to happen and where, but it’s great! Pool time is over for another year. It’s been the ideal summer for an outdoor pool, unlike last year with the wet and cold prevailing. The guards were great, pleasant and business-like in their jobs. So thanks to each one of you, you’ll do well in this world. Looking ahead, I just hope more people make plans to use the pool, knowing that when things aren’t used, someone will lose. Take a drive soon and enjoy the richness of our landscape. We take for granted the beauty and bounty that are right here, be it gardens, trees, fields, the Maitland River or Lake Huron with the ever-changing scenery. We are blessed. Enjoy the September days, a time to contemplate the seasons, knowing one follows the next. Bye now, Betty G.W.
