Brussels-based camera club to host gallery night Retired Blyth police officer takes over Mounsey run The beginning Brenda Orr, centre, has decided to take on leadership of the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund’s annual Run Around The Square, held on Mother’s Day in Goderich every year. Orr was in a relationship with Mounsey from 1999 until the time of his death in 2006. At the time, she felt she couldn’t emotionally assist in the charity formed in Mounsey’s name, but is now ready to step up and volunteer with a charity that couldn’t be closer to her heart. Orr is seen here in 2007 donating the defibrillator to the Blyth Fire Department that started everything. Mounsey and Orr ran a marathon in British Columbia to raise money for the defibrillator before Mounsey died in an on-duty crash. Orr is seen here with Mounsey’s late stepfather Colin Stanway, left, and late Blyth Fire Chief Paul Josling. (File photo) The Maitland Valley Camera Club will be hosting a gallery night/open house at the Brussels branch of the Huron County Library this evening, Sept. 5. The club will be showcasing the talent of its members in the community room of the library, featuring the work of approximately 20 members according to executive member Lynda Smith. The club is a non-competitive entity, Smith said, and puts a priority on enjoying taking pictures and learning from each other. She said that has been crucial to the group’s continued success. “We’re about learning and encouraging and helping each other,” she said. The club consists of members of every skill level, she said, from those using point-and-shoot cameras to semi-professional photographers. Having been around for about a decade, the group moved to Brussels several years ago and is trying to encourage more local participation. For more information, contact Smith at 519-955-3510. Brenda Orr of Blyth will be taking over as chair of the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund’s annual Run Around the Square. The event, held annually on Mother’s Day, has been running for 10 years and routinely raises thousands of dollars for the charity which places defibrillators in public buildings in southwestern Ontario. Orr retired last year after 30 years as an Ontario Provincial Police officer and felt that now was the right time to pledge more of her time to a good cause. The organization is one that is extremely close to Orr’s heart, as she and Dave were in a relationship from 1999 until his untimely death in 2006. Mounsey died as a result of injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash in his police cruiser late in 2006. Orr said that at the time, she was in no position emotionally to pitch in when Mounsey’s OPP partner Patrick Armstrong formed the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund, but she is now. The charity is built on Mounsey’s mission just before his death to raise money to buy a defibrillator for the Blyth Fire Department. He ran a marathon in British Columbia and would eventually raise the money, so the fund has continued to place defibrillators, over 100 now, throughout southwestern Ontario. They have saved three lives. While Armstrong remains at the head of the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund itself, fellow OPP officer Jason Moon had led the Run Around The Square for 10 years, but now feels it’s time to take a step back and let someone else lead. Recently retired, Orr said she was ready to step up to the plate and help keep Mounsey’s legacy alive. For 2020, Orr will be working alongside Moon to organize the run, however, after that Orr will be free to take the reins herself after she’s learned all she can from Moon. Because of her connection to Mounsey and the fund’s clear relationship with law enforcement, Orr said there is no charity that is closer to her heart than the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund. Now that she’s retired and it’s been nearly 13 years since Mounsey’s passing, she says she’s happy to be involved. Orr has not been on the sidelines during that time, however. In addition to her work as an OPP officer and raising children, she has also made a point to participate in the Run Around The Square every year, including its 10th year last year, when she took part in the new addition, the half-marathon. Orr jokes that by volunteering to run the event, it means she won’t have to run the half-marathon again, but she says she’s looking forward to keeping a well-run event going and building on all of Moon’s hard work. The Run Around the Square, she said, has become a great event on the Huron County calendar. It’s on Mother’s Day every year and it has built a great atmosphere that’s fun, but also reverent. She hopes to keep that and Mounsey’s legacy alive through her involvement. Knowing that Mounsey, through the fund and through the placement of defibrillators, is still out there saving lives, which is what he committed his life to through his work with the OPP and the Blyth Fire Department, is a great feeling, Orr said, and it has created quite a legacy for such a great man. (“Every Day!” Author unknown, 1872) “As many as are led by the Spirit of God — they are the sons of God.” Romans 8:14 Here is a mark of divine sonship: All who follow the leadings of the Holy Spirit — they are children of God. The Spirit leads His followers to the looking-glass of Divine truth. Here they discover their spiritual deformity and impurity. Here they see what they are — and what they need. The Spirit leads them to the throne of grace — and there He helps their infirmities, and makes intercession for them according to the will of God. The Spirit leads them to the cross! When they see Jesus dying for their sins, atoning for their transgressions — they lose the burden of guilt. The Spirit leads them in the path of loving obedience — and they experience the blessedness for keeping Christ’s commands. The Spirit leads them in the track of the Good Shepherd — and enables them to hear His voice and follow Him. “As many as are led by the Spirit of God — they are the sons of God.” Many, alas! are following the leadings of a very different spirit — “the spirit that works in the children of disobedience!” He leads, by paths of unbelief and sin — to endless misery and ruin! Beloved reader, beware of following his leadings — and prayerfully yield yourself to the guidance of the Spirit of truth and love. “Show me Your ways, O LORD, teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Saviour, and my hope in You all day long.” Psalm 25:4-5 Spirit of Truth, my Leader be, And seal adoption mine; Impress Christ’s image on my heart, The pledge of bliss divine!
