Townsman, 1991-02, Page 25artists a few years ago. Robert originally nurtured his artistic bent studying creative art and landscape photography. "I had always been fairly good at oil painting, but realistically how many artists can make a good living at it?" So after he and a friend visited the School of Design on the Lorne Park campus at Sheridan College, Robert began to develop an interest in another way of utilizing his talent. He was, he says, very lucky to have attended the college, which This unique pin won Robert an international award for his work. gives its students instruction in a diverse selection of creative classes, including woodworking, and woolen crafts in addition to the six-year course to study as a goldsmith. "They teach you the basics those years, then you go and continue learning on your own. After graduation, Robert went to work for a London jeweller where, he says, he could have worked for several weeks on the same job. "It was a little too much and I left after six months. That was all I could handle of production work, espe- cially after having gone to school to specialize. "But", he adds smiling, "when you first come out you need a job and everybody has to start somewhere." Many with Robert's experience and ability have not been able to pursue their early intention. Of his graduation class, he is, he says, the only one still working as a gold- smith.
