Leading off this week's new releases is City Hall ***1/2
(Columbia/Tristar), a thoroughly compelling drama involving the mayor
of New York (Al Pacino) and his young aide (John Cusack), who must
deal with a far reaching crisis triggered by a shoot-out between an off-duty
policeman and a drug dealer which results in the killing of a six-year-old
child. This is a fine and intelligent film from director Harold Becker with
an exceptional cast that also includes Danny Alello, Bridget Fonda, Martin
Landau, David Paymer and Tony Franciosa, all of whom give strong
performances. (Rated 14A - some rough language and violence)
I usually approach Hollywood remakes of classic foreign films with
more than a little trepidation and the current remake of Diabolique **
(Warner) hasn't changed my mind. This flat reworking of Henry Georges
Clouzot's classic 1954 thriller finds the wife (Isabelle Adjani) plotting the
murder of her husband (Chazz Palminterl) with the help of his lover
(Sharon Stone). While the inclusion of liberal doses of 90's brutality,
coarse language and a few sex scenes might be what today's audience
crave, the original remains a much better movie in every way. Directed by
Jeremiah Chechik and co-starring Kathy Bales. (Rated R)
If you are a fan of writer/director Oliver Stone then you will be thrilled
with the new special edition of Natural Born Killers (Malofilm - $29.95).
This director's version restores the 150 cuts made to receive an R rating
during its original release plus an additional hour of deleted scenes with
narration by Stone. To be honest I really hated this nasty movie the first
time around and personally have no intention of watching it again.
Available in both widescreen and standard versions (Not Rated)
As for the week's other new releases there is Homeward Bound II.• Lost
in San Francisco (Disney $24.95 or less) featuring the further escapades
of two dogs and a cat who become separated from their family. (Rated G)
In the lighthearted comedy Jack and Sarah (Polygram), a man finds
himself falling for the new babysitter. Richard Grant and Samantha Mathis
are the stars. (Rated PG)
The special collector's edition of The Crow ** (C/FP - $19.95 or less) a
depressingly dark action flick is notable mostly for the death of its star
Brandon Lee. This version also includes Lee's last on camera interview.
(Rated R)
As for me I would rather watch the additions to the National Geographic
video library. The titles include Wings of the Serengetti which looks at
nature's most misunderstood creatures, the vultures and other scavengers
who are an integral part of Africa's circle of life. Wildlife Warriors
presents the story of the life and death struggles to save Africa's
endangered animals while Last Feast of the Crocodiles explores survival
during one of the dark continent's' harshest droughts. Each title sells for
$24.95 or less.
