For Teens, By Teens
By Erin RoulSton
Every time I tell an adult that I
want to be an actor when I grow
up, I am amazed by the sideway
glances they throw my way. I'm
never taken seriously.
Most people think that it's
something I'll grow out of, and
occasionally I might be swayed
into thinking the same.
What is it about the
entertainment industry that makes
people skeptical? Movies, TV and
music are all such a huge part of
our lives, and the local theatres:
Blyth, Stratford, Grand Bend are all
important in our community, so
why is it that people never think of
acting or singing as a real career?
Most people think of it 'as just
something you play around with
until you buckle down and become
a doctor or lawyer.
I am a member of the Blyth
Festival Young Company and of
the 12 incredibly talented actors, I
am one of three who plan to
continue into the career. Why?
Although most of us would love to,
many think it isn't a real job. There
are so many aspiring actors, and so
few ever make it to fame that it's
just a ridiculous goal.
There's another question. Why is
fame so important to actors? Is that
the only reason anybody goes into
the business? To become famous?
Is that the right reason?
I admit that is a big temptation.
Imagine being admired and adored
by millions, all around the world.
Living in a mansion on a hill with
three swimming pools and five
tennis courts, riding around in
limousines all day. Sounds great,
but Brad Pitt can't even walk his
dog without being mobbed by
paparazzi.
I used to want to be famous, to
hobnob with all the stars, but then I
thought hard about what it is that
draws me to acting and it isn't the
fame.
What I love is getting a script, a
bunch of words on paper, and
watching it grow into a play,
watching the characters become
real before my eyes and feeling the
character inside of me, thinking
what they think, feeling what they
feel. I love working on a play over
and over until the jokes aren't
funny and the words don't make
sense and your fellow actors are so
annoying you want to throw them
out the window, then finally having
an audience, and hearing them
laugh and know that you made
them laugh and suddenly all your
hard work pays off. I love dancing
across the stage and feeling that
excitement swell up in my chest, I
love being alone in a spotlight and
knowing that all those eyes are
focused on ME and me alone! The
fame and recognition aren't
important to me, it's all of this and I
want to do this for the rest of my
life!
But, I'm not stupid. I know it isn't
easy. I know that acting isn't a very
reliable career, never knowing
where you next pay cheque is
coming from, and if you don't have
talent or if you don't have implants,
there might not be a next pay
cheque. Sometimes this thought
gets me down and I think that I
should consider another job, but
nothing sounds quite as exciting
and anything that comes close, I
just don't have the grades for.
I may never win an Oscar or an
Emmy or a Gemini, but that doesn't
mean I'm a failure, by far, because
as long as I'm happy and doing
what I love, I don't care.

Canada's best athletes have done
us proud. Smashing Canadian and
personal records left and right,
giving us dozens of memories we
soon won't forget. Rowing, our
specially, gave us six of the 22
medals. Cycling, although through
a diverse group of events, yielded
another five,
But according to a Toronto Star
poll Donovan Bailey's race which
proved him the world's fastest
human, took the cake.
While most of us were sitting on
our couches cheering on the
Canadian team; some local Blyth
residents were there in the flesh
applauding the Canadian's efforts.
Dave Sparling along with Steve
and Laurie Sparling and Matt King
travelled down to Georgia and
stayed in a house just outside of
Atlanta. In four days they viewed a
women's volleyball game,
gymnastics, a baseball game, track
and field, the women's platform
diving final, and rowing on
Sunday, where he saw the
Canadian flag raised three times.
But Dave said "...when you get
there and see the level of
competition and how topnotch it is,
it's pretty impressive that the

Canadians can finish in the top

And when Dave was asked about
the difference of watching them on
TV and live he replied, "Seeing
them in person is very different
from watching them on TV. In
person, it's a lot more exciting to
cheer for, as opposed to cheering at
your TV. But then, the views on the
tube are much better."
Dave's highlight of the games
was while on the way to watch
diving, they stopped to see the
100m finals on a big screen TV,
kept watching false start after false

that they wouldn't be late and
finally watching Donovan Bailey
win.
They had a fabulous time and
had no problem whatsoever. For
Dave the traffic problems were
non-existent as well as security and
