4-Hers
go for
the gold
By Andrew Toll
The Belgrave, Brussels 4-H Beef
Club met at the home of Vaughn
and Marlene Toll, July 30.
Members went to the barn to judge
wiener pigs. Qualities to look for
are good straight legs, a tight jowl,
and good hind quarters.
Leaders, Kim Higgins and Paul
Coultes chose four of the nine
members present to put the pigs in
order from best to worst.
A chapter was read from the 4-H
manual. Four members were
chosen to go to "Go For The Gold".
To end the meeting, Marlene
served cake and ice cream.
The Gibson Trophy was up for
competition at the Brussels Greens
Monday afternoon, July 29. Gerald
and Isabel Gibson donated the
trophy in 1981 to be awarded to a
team with the highest score for the
competition.
It is a 'fun day' for the local club
and their friends with a potluck
supper between the second and
third games. Each skip draws a
name and that person will be his or
her partner for the three games. The
Gibsons won it the first year. They
declined having their name on the
trophy and gave it to the next
highest team. Gerald has been
trying to win it every year since
and finally succeeded this year with
his partner Scott Raven, a visitor
from Airdrie, Alta. 3 wins 34.
Loss for U-9s
The Brussels 2 U-9 soccer squad
lost a close one to Listowel 3 on
July 22.
The two teams met in Brussels
and finished with a 4-3 score.
The home team was down 2-0,
then Matthew White scored once,
then again to tie. Listowel returned
with a third goal, then Chris Cor-
bett responded with one for Brus-
sels. In the last minute Listowel
sealed the victory scoring after a
penalty kick to end the game.
"It was an exciting game and an
excited cheering squad," said
Coach Laurie Chapman.
Sharing the task of keeping the
game in control at net were Corbett
and Eric Van Veen.
