Reunion promises full weekend
By Janice Becker
Remembering and cherishing the
past are key elements to any
reunion and the Blyth Continuation
School Reunion is no different.
Family and friends from years
gone by will gather in Blyth from
Aug. 2-4, to recall their school days
and hopefully take a few reminis-
cences and mementoes with them.
One such memento, which may
become a keepsake for families, is
a pen and ink sketch of the old
school which would have been 100
years old this year, if it remained.
Created by Blyth artist Sheila
Rintoul, the sketch was taken from
old newspaper pictures of the
building, during the mid-60s before
it was destroyed.
Though the drawing only took a
few days to complete, in working
It is a time for family and friends
to gather, renew acquaintances and
reminisce.
The Blyth School Reunion and
Homecoming, planned for Aug. 9-
11, will offer visitors a wide variety
of activities and social functions to
suit any taste.
Registration will begin Friday
evening at 7 p.m., to avoid the Sat-
urday morning rush. Free coffee
and goodies will be available to
those who pick up their registration
packages early.
The Blyth Lions Club will spon-
sor a mix and meet hospitality
house, Friday, at Lions Park, from
6:30 p.m. until la.m., and again on
Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The hospitality house will run in
conjunction with a ball tournament
and will feature music by a DJ.
After registering Saturday morn-
ing (if the Friday night slot was
missed), it will be time to dine on
all the pancakes, sausage, bacon,
juice and coffee you can, as the
Blyth Firemen put on their chefs'
hats.
The Blyth Optimists will be serv-
ing a light snack at Lions Park from
11:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.
The Blyth Church of God will be
operating a food booth at the
Municipal Parking lot from Thurs-
day to Saturday for those wander-
ing around uptown.
Official opening ceremonies will
take place on main street after the
12:30 p.m. parade from the arena.
For even more tasty treats, the
Blyth Legion Ladies Auxiliary will
serve a light lunch, at the arena,
beginning at 11 a.m., including
homemade soup and delicious pie.
If there is still room for yet
another mouth-watering meal, Jeff
Cardiff will be supplying the beef
barbecue for the Saturday evening
meal, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The day will come to a perfect
end with Ellusion providing the
Music at the 9 p.m., age-of-majori-
ty dance, on the floor of the 'arena.
The event is sponsored by the Blyth
Lions Club and Legion.
Upstairs in the arena, a jamboree
will be held so visitors can make
their own music or enjoy some
local talent. There is no admission,
but age of majority is required.
Throughout the day and prior to
the reunion, raffle tickets will be on
sale to help raise funds for new
playground equipment at the
school. The draw for a framed ink
sketch of Blyth Continuation
School and an' 8x10 photo of the
new school will be held Saturday at
6 p.m. Tickets are available from
any reunion committee member.
Sunday will start with more deli-
cious food, provided by the Lon-
desboro Lions, from 9 a.m. until 1
p.m., at the arena.
An ecumenical worship service,
held on the school grounds, weath-
er permitting, will satisfy the soul.
It begins at 1:30 p.m. and attendees
are asked to bring a lawn chair.
Inclement weather will move the
service to the arena.
Throughout the afternoon, the
Blyth Optimists will once again
offer a light snack at Lions Park.
Closing ceremonies will be held
after the worship service.
time, there was more than one ver-
sion until Rintoul was satisfied
with the result.
A beautifully framed print of the
sketch will be given as the grand
prize for the weekend draw, with
other prints sold at Green Gallery,
either framed or not.
Just the print, which is approxi-
mately 12" x 15", will sell for
$8.95. There will be a very limited
supply of card-size prints available.
Rintoul suggests anyone interest-
ed in purchasing a sketch should do
so as soon as possible as the supply
is expected to go quickly over the
reunion weekend.
Prints of the new Blyth Public
School will also be sold at the
gallery. One sketch of each build-
ing will be on display at the school
throughout the event.
