Alvin and Vera McDonald were
greeters at Duffs United Church on
July 28.
Rev. James Murray led the
congregation into the call to
worship and the singing of the
opening hymn followed.
Rev. Murray announced that he
and his family will be taking the
month of August off for their
vacation. He has plans to go fishing
and to return with a big fish or a
big fish story. Rev. Stephen
Huntley from Blyth will be around
if anyone is in need of a minister.
After the choir sang, Sweetgrass
and Candle the congregation sang
Give Me Oil in My Lamp as a
children's hymn.
The children were invited to
come forward for their special time
with the minister. Rev. Murray
asked them if they had ever
considered looking for buried
treasure. He went on to say that in
the olden days people would bury
their treasure in the ground. There
was also a rule of 'finders keepers,
losers, weepers', so one had to be
careful where they buried the
treasure. He said that what each
values is important, that something
that is a treasure and means a lot
may be of no value or importance
to anyone else. He told them that
the most important treasure to have
was faith in God.
Rev. Murray handed out a penny
along with bookmarkers that read,
'This penny isn't worth much, but
it's valuable to me. It reminds me
of the treasure of God's love you
see!'
The sermon was called, 'The
Dandelion Faith'. Rev. Murray told
how he looked out into his lawn
and noticed how the dandelions
were getting ready to bloom again.
He is quite positive that the pesky
weeds know how to duck whenever
the lawn mower comes along. He
also figures that when the weeds
are getting few in number they
seem to send ow distress signals to
all the neighbouring lawns and they
The Walton School and Com-
munity Support Group met for a
quick meeting last week with 10
people in attendance.
The purpose of the meeting was
to hear an update about the
playground equipment and it was
learned that at least three pieces of
the old equipment have to be
removed. It was decided that new
swings and a dual level climber
will be purchased and hopefully set
up in time for school in September.
Omission
Two speakers were inadvertently
omitted from the list of those who
brought greetings to McGavins on
their 60th anniversary.

Ontario Rural Farm Equipment
Dealers Association also spoke to
the gathering.

in turn send in some seeds.
It is only children, he said, who
seem to appreciate the beauty of the
dandelion. It is interesting to note,
he said, how man can put people on
the moon and cure all kinds of
diseases but he can't wipe out the
dandelion. "We are quite helpless
against its mighty power."
In the parable of the mustard
seed, a small seed grew into a huge
tree which could house many birds.
Actually in Jesus' day the mustard
plant was considered a dangerous
plant as far as getting them into
gardens. Although the plant could
be used for spices, and even medi-
cinal purposes one was warned not
to get the plant inside the walls of
the garden. It would take over
everything and would house birds
that would eat up the garden.
So, Rev. Murray asked, "Is God's
Kingdom like a field of dande-
lions? Jesus said that we are to be
like that mustard seed, a rather
shocking statement. Our kingdom
on earth has set up limits and rules
and borders. God's kingdom has no
limits and doesn't accept our divi-
sions and our limits that we set that
keep us apart from God and each
other. God, like the mustard seed,
adds spice and flavour to our lives."
"We can't contain or short out
His kingdom for it is everywhere in
our lives or at least it should be.
But we don't let him into lives, at
least not in to all parts of it. We
sometimes like to keep God at arms
length. But He cares about our
lives, how we spend our free time,
how we spend our money."
The message of the mustard seed,
he said, is that God doesn't accept
the limitations that people place on
Him. By coming to church people
are saying they are placing God
first in their lives, opening their
well manicured lawns, so to speak,
to allow seeds to take root in them.
"Let us become contaminated by
God's seed so that we may go and
spread compassion, forgiveness and
love to all."
Anyone interested in helping set
up the new equipment is asked to
phone Barb Durrell at 887-6068.
Chris Lee also attended the meeting
and told the group that he would
provide an opportunity for them to
raise money for the equipment at
the Transcan Motocross in August.
