Barracudas just getting better

Dr Shawn Edwards has joined the team at the Seaforth
Community Health Centre. Part of his duties will be
seeing patients at the Brussels Medical/Dental Centre.

By Janice Becker
A new member has joined the
community whose profession will
benefit the residents of both Brus-
sels and Seaforth.
The Seaforth Community Health
Centre has acquired the services of
another young doctor, Dr. Shawn
Edwards, who will be working in
both communities.
Having grown up in Dorchester,
just east of London, Edwards
returns to Southwestern Ontario
after completing his residency
training in the Kingston area. He
studied chemistry for two years at
the University of Western Ontario,
A short-handed Brussels B team
hosted Newton on July 18. The
home side lost 5-3 after leading for
most of the game.
Keeper Phil Graber had an
outstanding game and kept Newton
off the score sheet in the first half.
Brussels' forward Bronwyn Dunbar
opened the scoring. She carried the
ball in on the left wing and beat
Newton keeper Daniel Zettel. The
Brussels' attackers, led by Terry
Brown, constantly put pressure on
Newton. It paid off when Andrew
Grant scored.
In the second half Newton's
greater number began to pay off.
They pulled even, then Brussels
received a penalty shot. Brussels'
Brown hit the cross bar on the shot
and it bounced harmlessly out of
bounds. Brussels' Kirk Baillie
aggressively led the attack, but
Newton was able topull away.
In the away game Acre T also
short of players, lost to Palmerston
after holding them scoreless for
most of the game. The game ended
with Palmerston-winning 6-1.
In their last encounter of the
season the two Brussels teams met
in a hard-fought contest. Peter
Terpstra returned to the Acre T
London, then began in medicine in
1990 at the facility.
His training continued in
Kingston from 1995 to 1996 with a
concentration on family medicine.
"When I met Gwen (Devereaux)
and Mark (Woldnik, of the Seaforth
Community Health Centre), I was
looking for a small town practice
which would be good for a general
practitioner, with work in obstetrics
and emergency," says Edwards.
"They impressed me with the
way the group (of doctors) and the
clinic worked. The clinic is beauti-
ful and the hospital is handy. It was
a big draw."
The area also had the type of
lineup. He and teammate Richard
Terpstra mounted a strong attack.
Brussels' B keeper Tyler Bragg
held them scoreless.
At the other end of the field
Acre T keeper Cory Campbell,
constantly frustrated the Brussels B
forwards. They were able to get a
series of rushes going, but every
time Campbell was able to boot the
ball out of the way. The hard work
finally paid off and Andrew Grant
scored two goals. Terry Nichol
added a goal and Terry Brown
scored.
In the second half Acre T's Corey
Campbell moved to forward and
scored three goals. Amanda Bank
On Saturday morning, the
Brussels Barracudas swim team
swam in their last warmup swim
meet before they compete in the
Inter-County Swim Association's
Championship Meet, which will be
held in Mitchell. This warm-up
meet in Clinton resulted in the bet
swimming performance ever
delivered by the Barracudas. The
team finished in sixth place with 77
points, topping the team's 74-point
performance on July 6 of this year.
The Barracudas also sent their
largest team ever, with 22
swimmers. Swimming for the
Barracudas were Mary Ann
Aitchison, Brent Wheeler, Drew
Thomas, Aaron Richmond, Richard
Goetz, Katie Aitchison, Jessica
Spink, Rachel Elliott, Candice
Ross, Jimmy Franken, Kendall
Jutzi, Brittany Kellington, Amy
Ross, Katie Clark, Brooklyn
Wheeler, Michelle DeWit, Amy
Douma, Matthew Elliott, and
Assistant Coach Patricia Bonsma.
The team also had three members
swimming in their first competitive
swim meet — Tamara Koehler,
Heather Hiemstra and Kendra
Hiemstra.
Since this was the last warm-up
meet before finals, the Barracudas
experimented with new relay team
combinations. The 11 and 12-year-
old boys' medley team of Rachel
Elliott (swimming backstroke),
Kendall Jutzi (swimming breast-.
stroke), Matt Elliott (swimming
butterfly), and Jimmy Franken
patient population Edwards was
looking for, generally well-rounded
to cover the fields of geriatrics,
pediatrics, women's health and
emergency work.
Edwards says he is very glad to
be here and plans to be here for
some time. "A lot depends on gov-
ernment plans for hospitals," he
says, " but I think I'm here to stay. I
will happily meet with any new
patients."
Joining Edwards in his new loca-
tion is his wife, Juliet, who was a
nurse in Kingston, but will not be
looking for employment in the near
future as the couple is expecting a
child in a few weeks.
of Acre T carried the ball well and
had several good scoring
opportunities.
In the final minutes of the game
Acre T's Chad Neville drew a
penalty in the area. Their keeper
Mike Albers stopped Baillie's shot
but could not hold the ball. Kirk
took the rebound and scored.
(Swimming freestyle) placed third.
The girls' medley team of Kendra
Hiemstra (swimming backstroke),
Michelle DeWit (swimming
breaststroke), Brooklyn Wheeler
(swimming butterfly); and Amy
Douma (swimming freestyle)
placed fifth.
The open girls medley team
placed sixth, with Katie Clark
swimming backstroke, Amy Ross
swimming breaststroke, Patricia
Bonsma swimming butterfly, and
Brittany Kellington swimming
freestyle.
The freestyle relays were also
experimental for the Barracudas,
but still had great results, bringing
home a sixth place ribbon, a fifth
place ribbon, a fourth place ribbon,
a third place ribbon and a second
place ribbon. Sixth place was won
by the 11-12-year-old girls team
of, Kendra Hiemstra, Brittany
Kellington, Brooklyn Wheeler, and
Amy Douma. Fifth place was won
by the 11-12-year-old boys team of
Michelle DeWit, Katie Aitchison,
Matt Elliott, and Jimmy Franken.
Fourth place went to the nine-10-
year-old girls relay team of Heather
Hiemstra, Mary Ann Aitchison,
Rachel Elliott and Jessica Spink.
Third place was won by the open
girls relay of Amy Ross, Kendall
Jutzi, Katie Clark and Patricia
Bonsma.
The nine-10-year-old boys relay
won second place in a tight race,
finishing just two body lengths
behind the winning team.
Swimming for the nine-10-boys
team were Richard Goetz, Aaron
Richmond, Brent Wheeler and
Drew Thomas.
The best individual results for the
Barracudas came from eight-year-
old Brent Wheeler. In addition to
his second place relay, Brent swam
to first place finishes in freestyle.
backstroke, and in butteritY.
'Brent was not the only great
swimmer for the team though.
Matt Elliott finished fourth in the
individual medley. After losing his
goggles on his first length, Matt fell
well behind the other swimmers,
but refused to give up and passed
three swimmers on his fourth and
final length of the race.
Mary Ann Aitchison finished
sixth in the eight-year-old girls
freestyle.
In her first swim meet, Tamara
Koehler finished sixth in the eight-
year-old girls backstroke.
Amy Douma finished sixth in the
11-12-year-old girls backstroke.
Jessica Spink swam to a fourth
place finish in the nine-10-year-old
girls butterfly, giving a tremendous
swimming effort.
Assistant Coach Patricia Bonsma
placed fourth in her freestyle race,
as well as doing a great job of
coaching in the absence of the
team's head coach.
