`Barndance held over
Fireworks, a warm family drama
opening July 31 at the Blyth
Festival, is a new Canadian play
written by Gordon Portman. The
award-winning Edmonton play-
wright is particularly pleased that
Fireworks is receiving its premiere
at Blyth since his father's family
came from this part of the country.
The play is a magical journey
which centres around a broken
family held together by Wynn, an
elderly woman who is the light of
her husband's life, a solace to her
son, and a life-line to her grandson.
Her death shatters their world but
her memory lingers on to guide
them in their new lives. The
"fireworks" in the play are
moments of emotional insight
where each character finds the
courage to step into the future.
The cast features Blyth Festival
Artistic Director Janet Amos as
Wynn. Janet was last seen on the
Blyth stage as Rose Clarke in the
1995 production of He Won't Come
In From The Barn.
Ron Hastings, in his debut at
Blyth, plays Wynn's husband
Franklin. In an acting career
spanning more than 40 years, Ron
has performed as an original
member of The St. Lawrence
Centre in Toronto and on stages at
Stratford Festival, Neptune
Theatre, Canadian Stage, Festival
Lennoxville and the Charlottetown
Festival where he enjoyed world-
wide success playing the role of
Matthew in that Festival's
production of Anne of Green
Gables in Japan.
In the role of Wynn's son Frank
is John Wright who can also be
seen in Barndance Live! this
season. John is a veteran of more
than 20 years in theatre, having
worked the major stages across the
country. He has appeared in the
past Blyth Festival productions
Safe Haven, The Old Man's Band
and The Glorious 12th.
Rustey Davenport plays Wynn's
grandson Jamie. In his first year at
Blyth, Rustey can also be seen in
Mabelle
1 he cast is directed by Paul
Lampert, who has worked
extensively as both a director and
actor, including several years in
Europe. A graduate of the National
Theatre School of Canada, he spent
two years as associate director of
Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon
and was assistant to the artistic
director and principal of the
academy at the Shaw Festival from
1990 to 1994.
Fireworks will include music
composed by John Roby, who first
composed music for the Blyth
Festival production of The Life
That Jack Built in 1980. Since then
he has scored numerous shows and
written several musicals that have
premiered at the Festival — the last
being The Old Man's Band. Prior to
that he wrote Country Hearts, with
Ted Johns, and The Dreamland and
Girls in the Gang, with Raymond
Storey.
Set and costume designer
Victoria Wallace designed the 1995
Blyth production of This Year, Next
Year. Lighting designer Lesley
Wilkinson has designed for many
Blyth productions, including the
1995 productions of Jake's Place
and This Year, Next Year, along
with productions at theatres across
Canada.
Sponsored by Petro-Canada, with
media sponsor CKNX FM 102,
Fireworks runs in repertory with
Blyth's other three productions
until Aug. 31. For tickets, call

evening of local fun", "down-home
fun", "a humdinger of a collective",
"a skillful blend of several stories"
and "a good time".

Villa Eeden is set in a ramshackle

warm-hearted proprietor who can't
cook. A shocking death amidst a
weekend rush of strange guests,
raises the big question — was it
murder or was it a mistake? Death
by poison or death by dessert.
