The Citizen, 1996-07-24, Page 6PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 1996 ports Inauguration The Blyth Squirts were the first team on the new soccer field built behind the Blyth and District Community Centre, July 15. Though their opponent didn't show, an inter- squad game christened the field. Mite-y runner A member of the Brussels Mites tries to leg it out, but can't beat the throw to first base as the Wallace player grabs the ball for the out. The game, which was played in Brussels on July 17, was one in the loss column for the home team. Bright and early on Saturday morning, the Brussels Barracudas travelled to the Seaforth Lions Pool for their third swim meet of the summer. The cold morning air in Seaforth almost convinced the team to pack up and return to bed, but the Barracudas toughed it out an( swam to a seventh place finish with 69 points. On this day, the team consisted of Drew Thomas, Jessica Spink, Katie Aitchison, Rachel Elliott, Candice Ross, Richard Goetz, Aaron Richmond, Michelle DeWit, Brittany Kellington, Matt Elliott, Eileen Exel, Amy Ross, Assistant Coach Patricia Bonsma, and Coach Jay Hahn. Swimming with the Barracudas for the first time were new team members Mary Ann Aitchison and Amy Douma. Once the swim meet was underway, the cold air was forgotten and the focus of the Barracudas changed to swimming, with the team quickly scoring 20 points in the medley relays. With Douma swimming backstroke, DeWit swimming breaststroke, Matt Elliott swimming butterfly, and Kellington swimming freestyle, the team started the day with an impressive second place finish in the 11 and 12-year-old medley relay. This excellent performance was followed by another second place finish by the open boys relay team of Exel swimming backstroke, Amy Ross swimming breaststroke, Hahn swimming butterfly and Bonsma swimming freestyle. In her first competitive race, Mary Ann Aitchison swam to a fourth place finish in the girls' eight and under 33m freestyle. Goetz repeated his performance of last week, swimming to a sixth place finish in the nine and 10-year-old backstroke. The team's other ribbons from the individual races came from coach Hahn, who swam to fourth place finishes in both breaststroke and butterfly. Another swimmer of note was Richmond, who swam in the nine and 10-year-old 33m butterfly race for the first time, narrowly missing sixth place. Though the team did not place in many of the individual races, the Barracudas dominated the freestyle relays, and rendered their coach voiceless in the process. The four Brussels relay teams swam so well that by the end of the third relay, Coach Hahn had cheered his lungs out and could no longer speak. Leading off the relays was the team of Mary Ann Aitchison, Richmond, Goetz, and Thomas. The team swam a spectacular race and came from behind for a second place finish. Immediately following, the girls nine and 10-year-old team of Candice Ross, Katie Aitchison, Elliott, and Spink gave a tremendous effort to match the boys second place finish. The 11 and 12-year-old teamof DeWit, Kellington, Matt Elliott and Douma stroked to a third place finish, as did the open boys team of Exel, Amy Ross, Bonsma, and Hahn. The team will continue practising this week and on Saturday they will swim at their final warmup meet in Clinton. The Barracudas will then start training for the Inter-County Swim Association Finals, which will be held in Mitchell on Saturday, Aug. 10. Tykes' Cook smashes triple, homerun It was a tough game for the Blyth Blue Jay Tykes, travelling to Col- borne and bringing home a 23-18 loss, July 15. It was a well-played game by both teams with several Blyth play- ers contributing to the close score. On the offense, Justin Ritchie hit a double and Darcey Cook smashed a triple and a home run. Several singles were added by the rest of the squad. Defense was also tops with Eric Caldwell making a good play at second, Emily Urquhart deflecting a ball to Anthony Peters for an out at third and Brittney Peters nabbing an out at the same corner. Brussels U9s blank Elma Taking advantage of strong net- minding by Eric Van Veen and Cory Chapman, the Brussels 2 U9 Squirt soccer team blanked the vis- iting Elma squad, July 15. Matthew White had his sights set perfectly, blasting the ball between the posts six times. Van Veen added to the total with one of his own.
