WI members bring a friend The Belgrave Branch of the Women's Institute held a special "bring a friend" night on Tuesday, Nov. 18. It proved to be a great success and much enjoyed by the 17 members and 14 guests who attended. The evening got underway with refreshments. A wide variety of desserts were available. The usual opening exercises were conducted and President Audrey Fenton welcomed all. The theme of the evening was "A Prelude to Christmas". A number of Grade 8 students from East Wawanosh Public School, presented a lip sync performance of Summer Nights and also Itsy Bitsy Bikini. They did a super job and the audience was appreciative. Gladys Van Camp thanked them and presented a gift of money to be used towards their Quebec bus trip in June. Alice Nicholson gave two humorous readings, "Flour Sack Underwear" and "Getting Old". A very brief business meeting followed. Plans were finalized for a People Mabel's Moms met at their regular time on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Those who attended were Kim Higgins, Laura, Ashley, and Jarrod; Rev. Mary Jane Hobden and Stephen; Alison Wightman and Autumn; Linda Hess and Judith; Lila Procter and Jessica. Their topic was "Daycare". Mr. and Mrs. David Pickell, Continued on page 19 November Birthday Tea, held at Braemar Nursing Home Nov. 20 and also the Christmas program and meal for this branch. A turkey dinner will be catered to the WI members and their guests, on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the WI Hall. Meeting convenor Norma Moore, assisted by her daughter, Barb Black, conducted a make-it-and- take-it craft class. A wooden, painted Christmas angel was the result and members and friends enjoyed creating these masterpieces. In the new year the potluck meals will resume as in past years. Watch for announcements about these popular meals and programs in the future. Florence McArter welcomed worshippers and handed out the service of worship on the Reign of Christ/Children's Sunday and Baptism at Knox United Church, Belgrave on Sunday, Nov. 23. John Nixon ushered guests. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden welcomed everyone. This was followed by the singing of Blessed Assurance and Take the Name of Jesus With You for songtime. Next was silent meditation, Call to Worship read responsively and Prayer of Approach said in unison. The Hymn of Praise was All Hail the Power and the Prayer of Confession was read in unison from the bulletin. The Words of Assurance were read responsively. The senior mixed choir sang If You Love Me, Truly Love Me, accompanied by Elizabeth Procter. The Old Testament reading was from 2 Samuel 23: 1-7. The children gathered in the front pews for story time. This centred around God's dream that every child would have love and a loving family to look after them. "We are all God’s children and a part of God's dream," Rev. Hobden said. The congregation sang, Jesus, Friend of Little Children. The sacrament of baptism was followed as outlined in the song book. Melanie Pletch, member of session, introduced Drew Robert, son of Corey and Cindy McKee and Jeffrey Dylan, son of Jim and Karen Hallahan, babies to be baptized. Rev. Winners were: high lady, Aileen Leddy; second high lady, Alice Nicholson; lone hands, Norma Moore; low lady, Lillian Appleby; high man, Harvey Edgar; second high man, Milt Boyd; lone hands, Jim Coultes; low man, Bob Grasby. and the love of God which surrounds them. The children adjourned for Sunday School. Mary Cook was in charge of nursery. Psalm selection was 132 verses 1-12 and the Gospel lesson was taken from John 18: 33-37. The congregation sang Jesus, Saviour Pilot Me. The sermon was "King of Kings, Lord of Lords." "What does it mean to us to call z. Jesus King?" Rev. Hobden asked. Jesus brings love and life, healing and peace; for in him is life. Alicia Potter and Ken Procter took up collection. The offertory song was "All That I Am". Prayers of the people and The Lord's Prayer followed. The closing hymn was The Lord is King.
