Brussels Livestock report Norwich Packers purchases top steer at $99.75 The sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending Nov. 7 were: fed cattle, 927; cows, 419; veal and bob calves, 580; lambs and goats, 186; Stockers, 1,960. The fed steers and heifers sold $1 lower with cows selling on a steady trade. Veal sold steady with lambs selling on a strong market. All classes of Stockers were selling steady on Friday. There were 569 steers on offer selling from $87 to $91 to the high of $99.75. Forty-one steers consigned by Murray Shiell, Wingham, averaging 1,360 lbs. sold for an average of $89.12 with sales to $99.75 purchased by Norwich Packers. Thirteen steers consigned by Roy Schmidt, Woodstock, averaging 1,448 lbs. sold for an average of $89.51 with sales to $95. Twenty- six steers consigned by Don Shiell, Wingham, averaging 1,362 lbs. sold for an average of $88.73 with sales to $94.50. Four steers consigned by Irvin Schenk, Petersburg, averaging 1,392 lbs. 17"“JF arm □ Perth County youth takes 3rd at Royal Mairi Sunter of Guelph, Ontario won the 1997 Young Speakers for Agriculture competition held at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto on Saturday, Nov. 8. Emily Balzer from Fredericton, NB and Amy Dickieson from Palmerston, finished second and third respectively. Thirty-three contestants from across Canada participated in the contest. Each contestant was required to give a five to seven minute speech, as well as introduce and thank another contestant. The speech topics related to one of the following: * My Fondest Childhood Memory of Life on a Farm * Economic Challenges Facing the Family Farm * Revitalizing our Rural Communities, Agriculture's Challenge * The Royal - Celebrating the Past - Embracing the Future * Rural Organizations, Serving the Needs of Young Farmers in the Next Millennium The winner, who spoke on "My Fondest Childhood Memory of Life on a Farm", received $1,000 from Farm Credit Corporation (FCC). Sunter will also have the opportunity to spend a day with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) staff exploring areas of her interest. The second and third place winners, received $500 and $250 respectively. The other three finalists Trevor Pinkney from Guelph, Wenday Killing from Hickson and Amanda Racher from Petrolia, all received a $150 award from Farm Credit Corporation. This is the 13th consecutive year that the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair has hosted this competition. Started in 1985, for the International Year of the Youth by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Farm Credit Corporation joined as a sponsor in 1987. All youth between the ages of 16 - 24 are eligible to compete. Royal offers sights, sounds sold for an average of $90.87 with sales to $93.75.
