By Crystal McLellan and Brook Wheeler This week there were many volunteers that came in to read in each classroom. One of the read-in week volunteers put "ahh's" on most of the kid's faces. The Maple Leafs have two goals and the Avalanche's have one. Here comes the NHL official linesman Scott Driscoll. Mrs. Whyte, the Grade 6/7 Dyck sees one positive in talks Continued from page 1 Minister said he needed time to sort through. It was following this, he said, that the service contract was leaked, noting the government's plan for savings in public education amounting to $670,(XX),000. "It put into a new perspective what the teachers have been saying, that Bill 160 is to remove $1 billion from public education. It was verified." The next day, the Ontario Teach ers' Federation announced the strike. "We had said we would give 48 hours notice. We could have gone out on Friday, but with Mon day as the day, we provided a door way for the government to walk through. It was a handshake ges ture," Dyck said. One positive Dyck saw was the hiring of a facilitator. "This is a good sign. You have had two sides that don’t like each other. A third party \yill help." 6P" printers. One has been placed in the library for use as a network printer. The other printer has been hooked up to Mrs. Watt's computer. We have also bought a "Scanjet teacher, and Ms MacDonald, the Grade 4 teacher, are his wonderful cousins. Mr. Driscoll started in 1992 refereeing house league teams. His wife's name is Colleen and his son's name is Ryan. He has his teaching degree, but decided to become an NHL linesman. Mr. Driscoll told about his successful career but also told us about how reading is so important. If he could not read he would not be able to memorize the rules, then he would not have his job. Crystal The problems of lost class time, a need for day care and the illegality of the protest have had the teachers under attack from those who fear it will irreparably hurt the students' education. I figured that anyone who passed by Mr. Maerten's office thought that I was in BIG trouble, but little did they know that I was in for much more than that. I started my interview with this very simple question, "Mr. Maertens, has ANYTHING interesting happened lately?" He replied with a friendly, "Yes." One of the interesting things that he told me about was "The Character First Education Series Program". This program teaches the students Attentiveness, Truthfulness, Gratefulness and other necessary qualities to help the students get along better. Every second Monday, three representatives from this organization visit the students from Grade 1 - 5 and teach the students these qualities. Mr. Maertens also informed me that a new school roof is going to be installed sometime during this school year. "Casual Day for the United Way" allows teachers to wear casual clothing on Fridays^ The money they pay for this privilege goes to the United Way. A plaque will be installed honouring the various groups that helped the school financially when the new playground equipment was purchased. My interview may have not lasted very long, but I sure did learn some interesting things that are going to be happening in and around our school this coming year.
