The Citizen, 1997-10-29, Page 10PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29,1997. Morris reeve in by acclamation Melody White During her two and a half year tenure on Morris Twp. council, Councillor Melody White has served on the Wingham Area Fire Board and the Farm Safety Association. In seeking re-election, White says, she wishes to maintain management of the landfill site and help establish an option for waste disposal in the future which would be most beneficial and profitable to the ratepayers of her riding. "I will strive to have the fire agreements revised to allow the Brussels Fire Department to have sole coverage to the homes at the edge of Brussels, in close proximity to the available fire hydrants," she said. "I would also enlarge the first response area for the Brussels department, in the areas that are closest to the village." "I believe my two and a half years on council has been a valuable experience and would like the opportunity to continue serving our residents on issues such as amalgamation, the landfill site and 9-1-1. John Duskocy Having served two previous terms on Morris Twp. council, John Duskocy said he is once again seeking a seat to enable him to deal with the landfill site issue and to save the drainage program. The other important issues for Duskocy are restructuring of area municipalities, policing of r the township in 1998, 9-1-1 and the joining of the school boards in January. "I believe taxpayers should be given the opportunity to express their opinion on these issues," he said. During his terms, Duskocy has served for six years on the Wingham and Area Fire Board, three years on the Belgrave Community Centre Board and a year on the Huron County Economic Development committee. Kevin Pletch Incumbent Kevin Pletch, Belgrave is running for Morris Twp. councillor. In addition to his four years on council, he has been chairperson on Belgrave Arena Board, and president of Belgrave Kinsmen. His reason for running is that he is "not in favour of what the government is downloading on the township." Pletch feels the most important issue is amalgamation and says "bigger is not always better." His personal goal is to keep taxes down. Keith Johnston Keith Johnston has been acclaimed to the position of deputy reeve for Morris Twp., a role he has filled for the previous two years. Johnston hopes to work to provide the best possible fire protection for all residents, he said. On th issue of amalgamation, he is looking for input from rate payers, to do what they want done as well as on the future of the landfill site. Johnston is also concerned about the affect of downloading on taxes. "I fell I am on council to represent the people and to do what the majority want," he said. Edna McLellan Edna McLellan is seeking a position on Morris Twp. council. She has been the president of Majestic Women's Institute, involved with the BM&G Catering Group, palliative care, Brussels Fair Board, and a 4-H leader for 10 years. She said she "enjoys working with people and would like to help keep the taxes down and catch a problem before it gets blown out of hand." She feels the most important issue is amalgamation and down loading of services. She would like to see "council more accountable to their taxpayers." Neil Warwick First time candidate Neil Warwick, RR2, Bluevale is running for Morris Twp. councillor. Warwick's concerns are about what's happening to the local municipality with restructuring. He is also concerned about tax increases and "erosion of services". He feels the most important issues are, downloading of fees and services to local municipalities, amalgamation, and the local dump site's future. His personal goal is to "do rtiy best to represent Morris Twp. ratepayers." Bert Elliott Incumbent Bert Elliot is seeking re-election. He has been a school trustee, councillor, deputy, and has been on many other boards and committees over the years. Elliott says because of his "many years of experience," he would like the chance to "help in this time of change." He feels the most important issue is the township landfill site, restructuring and amalgamation. His personal goal is that he would, "like to be reeve of Morris for one more term before he leaves municipal politics."
