Library celebrates special week
Ontario Library Week, Oct. 20 -
26, is an annual opportunity for
Ontarians to celebrate the
contribution made by libraries to
the lives of millions of people
across the province.
The theme for this year's Ontario
Library Week is Ontario Libraries,
Pushing the Limits!
On one hand, Ontario's libraries
face increasing challenges to
maintain current services, as well
as pressure to offer new ones, in an
environment of changing political
structures, declining tax support
and increased emphasis on
fundraising. On the other hand,
libraries face unique and exciting
opportunities provided by new
technologies, such as Network
2000.
Network 2000 is a strategy to
eventually create a 'virtual'
provincial library for all Ontarians,
including those in rural and small
communities. It will help libraries
provide access to the multimedia
information resources on the
information highway by means of
high-speed links between public
libraries, provincial public service
information resources and services,
and the global information
infrastructure.
Using this network, libraries will
offer new, innovative information
services, reduce costs associated
