FWIO honours Walton woman By Janice Becker Citizen staff More than 40 years of dedication to an organization has brought recognition for a Walton woman. During the 100th anniversary cel ebrations of the Federated Wom en's Institute of Ontario, Marjory Humphries, a member since June, 1956, was honoured for her contri bution to both the organization and her community. Each branch of the Women's Institute across the province was asked to submit one name for the honour. Of the 500 entrants, 100 recipients were chosen. Humphries, not one to boast of her accomplishments, credits the wonderful support of her club and community with the work in which she has been involved and her nom ination for the award. During her 40 years of involve ment, Humphries has held the posts of: president and secretary at the branch level; president, secretary, public relations officer and several convenorships at the district level; secretary for five years for the area and served on the board of directors for the FWIO, representing subdi vision 11, Centre and North Perth and Huron East. Outside the WI, Humphries was involved in 4-H and was the secre tary for the Teeswater Junior WI when it was formed. Aside from her contributions, Humphries was also judged on her answers to three Wl-related ques tions. Seeing declining involvement in the WI, Humphries says, "It is still needed after 100 years. It focuses on a better home life and a better community." Recognizing the pull of other activities available in the communi ty, Humphries says, "The WI is an organization which promotes self growth and community develop ment. The more involved we get, the more we learn." Locally the WI has helped to institute such programs as street signs and house numbers in Walton as well as the blue box recycling program. On a more provincial level, Humphries says the WI has been Dedicated member h member of the Women's Institute for more than 40 years, Marjory Humphries of Walton, received recognition for her contributions at the FWIO annual meeting.
