The Brussels Tigers completed
their fastball season by capturing
the Huron County Fastball League
title and adding the WOAA grand
championship.
In the league final the Tigers
swept aside the Walton Brewers in
two straight games.
In game one, the Tigers opened
the scoring in the first as Tim Fritz
scored on Brian Neill's RBI single.
Walton answered with the tying run
in their at-bat as Steve Knight
scored Bruce Peam.
Brussels took the lead in the third
as a Steve Fritz triple was promptly
cashed on a Doug Shaw RBI
double.
The Tigers counted four runs in
the fifth to put the game on ice as
Greg Fritz, Tim Fritz, Murray Pipe
and Todd Uhrig all scored runs to
chase Brewer starter Bob Steiss.
Walton counted one in the fifth
as Paul Delmage scored on a Jeff
Robinson fielder's choice.
Brussels added three big
insurance runs in the seventh as hits
by Ken Higgins, Niell and S. Fritz
all scored to make the final 9-2.
Pipe was three for four for the
Tigers as was S. Fritz. Uhrig went
all the way for the Tigers fanning
14 Brewers.
In game two, the Tigers jumped
on Walton starter Scott Leonhart
for five first-inning runs and
cruised to a 5-2 victory to clinch
their third consecutive league
championship.
In the first T. Friz led off with a
hustling double and was cashed in
as Pipe followed with an RBI
single. Consecutive hits by Ken
Higgins, Doug Conley and Neill all
produced runs to give the home
side a 5-0 lead after one.
Walton counted their only runs in
the third as Knight ripped a two-run
homer to centre to cut the lead to 5-
2.
Uhrig's pitching and strong
Tigers' defence took over the game
as the home side closed the door on
any Walton scoring threat. Neill
was two for three at the plate as
was S. Fritz. Uhrig pitched the
complete game for the win, striking
out nine visitors.
After celebrating the League
championship the Tigers travelled
to Harriston to open the WOAA
grand championship series.
The Tigers opened the scoring in
game one in the first as S. Fritz's
one-out single was plated by a
Uhrig double.
The Mercurys got even in their
first at-bat and took a 2-1 lead after
three with a single run in the third.
S. Fritz knotted the game at two
with a long homerun to right.
Brussels took the lead to stay in the
sixth as Shaw scored Conley and
Ron Strome who had both singled.
The Tigers added one more in the
seventh as T. Fritz tripled and, one
out later, scored on a solid RBI
single by Uhrig.
Harriston added one in the
seventh and were threatening.
Uhrig relieved starter Conley who
went a solid six innings. With two
out Uhrig got the final out on a
bouncer to short.
S. Fritz was 3-4 at the dish.
Conley collected the win for the
Tigers striking out 6.
Game two Sunday in Brussels
was definitely a pitcher's dual
between Harriston's Ryan Martin
and the Tigers' Uhrig.
The game remained scoreless
until the fifth when with one out
Strome singled and scored as T.
