Clinton teen a success in Canada Games
By Mark Nonkes
Over the summer, a 16-year-old
swimming wonder from Clinton,
struck gold in the pool at the
Canada Summer Games.
Kristy Cameron, a Grade 11
student attending St. Anne's
Secondary School, has made many
splashes in pools across the
country, but her most successful
National Meet took place this
summer in Brandon, MB.
Kristy trains around 15 hours a
week in Vanastra with the Huron
Fair performers
A trio of F.E. Madill Secondary students made an appearance along with two other bands.at
Stratford Fair this past week. The fledgling band, who performed for a one-hour show, *
consists of, from left: bass player Shaun Scott of Teeswater, drummer Rob McKercher of
Hurricanes. She joined the team at
age 13. During those 15 hours,
Kristy practises her techniques and
works on four different strokes:
freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke
and the butterfly. Kristy's strongest
stroke is the breaststroke, but she
prefers the butterfly over the rest,
since it is the most difficult.
Prior to the Canada Games,
Kristy had competed in many
competitions, against several
Olympic stature athletes, including
the 1996 silver medalist, Marianne
FEATURE
Limpert, and Joanne Malar.
The Canada Games is an event
for senior-level competitors, in a
wide array of events. The funding
for the Canada Games comes from
the competitor's own pocket.
Athletes who have competed in the
National Championships, who
receive provincial funding and
those who have represented Canada
in international events are not
eligible to compete in the Canada
Games.
Kristy joined Team Ontario for
the Canada Games. She was

When Kristy was asked what

memories she will take from the
Summer Games she stated, "It was
a lot of fun. It was really neat to
meet a whole bunch of different
people. People you have never seen
before or that you have competed
against before."
When she left Brandon, on Aug.
16, Kristy left with more weight in
her bags than when she came. She
won medals in every event she
competed in; a gold in the 200-
metre breaststroke, a silver as part
of Ontario's relay team and two
bronzes coming from the 200-metre
individual medley and 100-metre
breaststroke.
Kristy is very optimistic about
her future in swimming. Next year
she hopes to represent Canada in
the Commonwealth Games and at
some other international events.
Then, three years down the road
she hopes to go to Sydney,
Australia, participating in the 2000
Olympic Games.
With the success she has already
had at age sixteen, these goals
could be within her reach.

Three Madill students had an
exciting experience this past week.
Their band was invited to play at an
amateur talent show, sponsored by
Stratford Fair.
Bass guitarist Shaun Scott of
Teeswater says, "It was really cool
that the fair people gave us a
chance like this."
Other members of Pearish are,
drummer Rob McKercher of
Jamestown and lead guitarist
Joshua Gropp of Brussels. Joshua
and Shaun are Grade 10 students,
while McKercher is in Grade 9.
The concert, which featured three
young groups was held in an out
door tent on the fairgrounds last
Thursday night. The MC was a DJ
from a local radio station.
While the crowd at the talent
show was smaller than the boys
expected, they all agree, however,
that they had a great time. "Shaun
said the band played well despite
having been together for only five
months. Also, when the chance
came up, the band still had no lead
singer, so Joshua and Shaun shared
the duties — this time." We'd like
to get a full-time singer," the pair
said.
The group does a mix of mostly
new and some old. Joshua felt their
best song was Green Day's most
recent Hitching a Ride.
He added that everyone was real
ly nice and did a lot to make sure
the performance was professional.
"We really appreciated all the help
we got from the soundman, Earl
Filsinger," says Joshua.
Shaun agreed. "He was a REAL
LY big help."
While the band members each
bring their own influences into the
group, they like alternative, rock,
punk and oldies.
