The Citizen, 1997-09-10, Page 26PAGE 26. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1997. For Teens, By Teens Little green men Do you know what love is? BY ERIN ROULSTON Okay, here's a teenager's dilemma for you: what is love? All the time I'm reading in Seventeen and YM magazine about love: how to tell if he really loves you or if he just wants sex, how to know if the two of you are destined to spend your lives together, when to say the L-word (and when to shut up); these magazines have tons of articles. Unfortunately, most of it is complete bull. Now, Mr. Webster defines love as: "to be delighted with, to admire passionately," which, to me, doesn't quite cut it. Here's the question: is the love between a mother and her daughter the same love as between a guy and a girl? What does sexual desire have to do with any of it? Is love forever? And, most importantly, how do you know if you are in love? Well, the first one seems easy: no. I love my mother in a very unique way. I depend on her, and always have, she is my teacher and my mentor and I adore her. The love between a man and a woman (or whatever the case may be) is a mutual respect and adoration, I think. It's an appreciation for every single aspect of a person's being, including all their faults. I also wonder: what part of love is lust? Can a man and a woman love each other without lust? How can you tell the difference between love and lust? I think both aspects are very important. I don't know how well a relationship would go if the couple had no sexual desire for each other. Maybe quite well, maybe very poorly. Telling the difference between love and lust, I think, takes time. If time goes by and you are finding more and more things about your girlfriend or boyfriend that annoy the heck out of you, maybe, just maybe, your relationship is based on lust. Time reveals all character incompatabilities. Is love forever? This is a very difficult one. I've always liked to believe that it is. I like to think that if you love a person once, you will always love them or who they were, even if you never speak again. And, if after the relationship is over you look back and honestly say you hate them, then it never was love. But that doesn't really answer the question. Is love forever? If I fall in love now, will I still love him 80 years from now, despite any temptations that may arise? With the growing number of divorces each year, the answer to that becomes more evident. I'm sure most of those divorced couples would tell you, yes, we fell out of love. Which makes me so sad. If I was in love, if I was that close to a person, I wouldn't ever want to lose them. I would want it to be forever. And how about that true love that they always talk about in the fairy tales. "Death cannot stop true love." It's that love, they say, which destines people to be together lifetime after lifetime. Is there such a thing? I don't know. And now, the most important of the questions: How do you know if you are in love? Well, you tell me. FEATURE Teen images, unfair role models BY MARK NONKES The green men from outer space come to earth and try to invade us. Hollywood has tapped into the extra terrestrial theme and is making many movies dealing with the aliens. Hollywood has always toyed with the idea of aliens coming to earth like in ET, the friendly alien. But since last year's biggest hit, Independence Day, Hollywood has gotten alien fever. Following Independence Day there arose a vast number of the green man theme movies. It started with Mars Attacks, last December, a spoof about sophisticated life on Mars, that, (guess what?) attacks Earth. The movie starred Jack Nicholson and Glenn Close and many other big name actors made cameos. During the winter they rested the idea until this summer. Two movies hit the big screen raking in the money. The first being Men In Black. Will Smith starred with Tommy Lee Jones; Smith again in another alien movie, only this time it was more of a comedy than an action film. The movie tells a story about aliens already living among us, Tommy and Will two extraterrestrial cops monitoring the little green men. It proved to be one of the summer's biggest hits. The other movie, Contact stars Jodie Foster. This movie is a drama. We don't see any of the guys from outer space but it tells the story of signs from the "extraterrestrial and their superior intelligence. This movie is one of the summer's best. Foster does a superb job as the astronomer studying our cosmic neighbours. A must-see for anyone who enjoys viewing movies of this nature. The rage continues this fall, where a number of movies deal with the out-of-this-world subject. Starring in some of these films are: Winonna Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. It seems the green men are making their money for Hollywood. It should be interesting to see how long this craving for the extraterrestrial will last. This was the question I have asked many teenage girls. Over half those interviewed expressed feelings of jealousy, frustration, or depression. As "Lee" age 15 put it, "You look at them and it's bad enough that they are absolutely gorgeous, but they have the perfect bodies, too! Small thighs, long legs..." "It's not fair! How are the rest of us supposed to compete with that?" wonders Sara, also 15. "Erin", who is 17, says she just wants to crawl into a corner and cry" when she sees those magazines because "If that is what is beautiful, then I could never even begin to be beautiful." "I’m always on fad diets. My doctor says I'm at a good weight, but she doesn't have to live with (someone skinny) for a best friend," announces Amanda, 14. Jane, 17, asks, "If we are all beautiful like the magazines try to tell us, then why do they only feature one look for their models?" On the other side of things, Lisa, who is 16, says that the magazines’ models aren't the problem. "The problem is that too many girls believe that is how we are supposed to look, but most of those girls are incapable of ever having that Unbelted passengers are: five times more likely to be killed, four times more likely to be hospitalized than are belted passengers. By buying magazines that make you feel fat, you're only telling companies that since they are selling, they must be right." Give Someone a Second Chance.
