talking. You can find out where to get
authentic paint for equipment, especially for
antique cars," he says, by talking to those
who attend. "The older collectors know the
colours. Old magazines are also a help."
GARY COURTNEY
From attendance as a tot, through refusal
as a teen, Gary Courtney of Blyth came back
to the Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion and
Hobby Show as an adult.
When the reunion borrowed lumber from
Manning's Building Supplies, Courtney's
employer, in the 1970s, to construct tables
for the community centre, Courtney was
enlisted as a forklift operator to help.
After that, involvement and membership
just seemed natural, he says.
Over his 27 years of participation in the
reunion, Courtney has helped with the
infrastructure of the event, building tables
and bleachers, constructing hydro boxes for
the campgrounds, putting steel on the sheds
and pouring concrete for the floors.
Attendees may also recall seeing Courtney
at the nightly com roasts, an activity he has
been helping with for year, he says.
Even as a Blyth resident, the Courtney
family gets into the spirit of the event by
camping on the grounds for the duration of
the reunion.
"It is the comradeship," says Courtney, as
he explains his long membership.
Courtney served for six years as a director,
is in his third year as vice-president and will
become president for the 37lh edition of the
reunion.
STEPHEN TIFFIN
"One man's rags is another man's riches."
That seems to be the motto of those
vendors taking part in the Huron Pioneer
Thresher Reunion and Hobby Show flea
market as they come from across the region
to display their wares.
Stephen Tiffin of Wingham, organizer of
the display and club treasurer, has been a
member for 10 years, since he was about 16.
"I first became involved through my uncles

was to babysit and get meals. Now that we
have the steam engine, we cook the meals in
the smoke box. We have seen this a lot at
other shows, but not many do it in Blyth."
Having worked with the Threshers during
a growing period, Houston says they all
worked hard to get things going. "We were
part (of the group which ) developed the
constitution for the club. It is like my baby. I
like to see it grow up without imposing to
many of my ideas on it."
MARIAN HALLAHAN
The Hallahans and the Huron Pioneer
Thresher Reunion and Hobby Show seem to
go hand-in-hand.
Marian Hallahan of Blyth, secretary for
the Thresher Reunion since June 1982, took
over the position from her uncle-through-
marriage, Simon Hallahan, one of the
founding members of the reunion, and the
only other secretary the club has had in its
36 years of existence.
Marian Hallahan first became recording
secretary in 1981, to assist her uncle, after
her husband volunteered her for the post
when she was not in attendance at a meeting.
Because of the continuity of only two
secretaries, Hallahan says the style of his
minutes and hers correspond smoothly
through to last year when the minutes went
computerized.
That move to technology brought
involvement from a third generation of
Hallahans when Marian's son, Kevin, helped
with the work.
As for her longevity as club secretary,
Hallahan simply says, "I guess I have
become a fixture."
Aside from her working duties, Hallahan
say the people she meets at the reunion each
year are really nice and it is great to see
them return. "I enjoy the whole weekend.
Everyone gets together and has a good time.
I can relax and chat in the evenings. The
pressure is off."
GEORGE UNDERWOOD
As with many of the Thresher Reunion
members, George Underwood of Wingham
began attending the event through
exhibiting his collection.
Underwood began showing Allis
Chalmers tractors and equipment at the
Blyth reunion about six or seven years ago,
he says, and becoming a committee member
three years later just "seemed like a natural
step."
Now in the last of his three-year term as
second vice-chair, Underwood says it is the
people as well as his interest in collecting
antique tractors which draws him to the
show.
"I like meeting new people. It spawns
more interest in tractors when you get
