Attending his first jamboree, Robert Goodall of Londesboro says his favourite events were those that involved water, whether walking on it with personal pontoons, pad dling through it or maneuvering over an obstacle course. Goodall and Ross Clark of Blyth, were amongst the 13,872 scouts from across the country to gather for a week of activities, camping and pin swapping. Obtaining that elusive pin or badge is a major goal for the scouts. Goodall gathered many from across the country as well as having several good offers for a few of his. However, he had to turn down one eager bidder as he was after a pin obtained years ago by Goodall’s father. It was not avail able for trade, he says. Other activities which Goodall found to be “lots and lots of fun” were the Westward Ho events. The scouts had the opportunity to do woodburning, branding, chuck wagon races and, Goodall’s favourite, slingshot shooting. It was probably one of his favourite because he was able to tie the record with 11 targets knocked down. Pastor Leslie Cook, his wife Jackie and daughter Katie were in charge of the children's program and Bill and Mary Marsh led the children's choir, as well as an adult sing-song around a campfire each night following the service. Conferences during the day were well attended, and the evening services usually saw around 250, including 50 - 60 youths, gather into the tabernacle to hear evangelist, Rev. David Shultz and to enjoy the music under the leadership of Gregory Prather, minister of music.
