Lions Clubs get thanks from letter writers
Continued from page 4
when he participated in the official
opening ceremonies, and I know
that he, as a former reeve and
businessman, was honoured to do
so.
What an enjoyable afternoon was
experienced by everyone at the
school reunion, when we talked
with friends and looked at class
pictures from school days.
The village looked very festive,
with all the decorations. The
displays in the store windows were
interesting, bringing back many
memories also.
What a wonderful weekend! It
will be remembered by everyone
for a long time. I hope that another
Homecoming weekend will be held
in five or 10 years from now.
Yours truly,
C. Lawrie Cousins.
THE EDITOR,
We would like to thank the Blyth
and Londesboro Lions Club for
providing a bus for Blyth and area
children to take swimming lessons
in Vanastra from July 28 - Aug. 8.
Also thanks to Helen Hummel, the
bus driver.
Thanks to all who organized this
service for our children.
Sincerely,
Hank and Shirley Reinink and
family,
John and Anne Reinink and
family.
THE EDITOR,
On Aug. 3 my wife and I had the
privilege of attending the excellent
Homecoming parade in Brussels. It
shows what small rural communi
ties can do that large cities can't do;
that is to put on a great parade
without thousands of dollars in
corporate money.
In the views of some spectators
there was a damper put on this
festivity. All along the parade route
were many people with video and
still cameras to get pictures of this
great parade and be able to look
back on them in years to come.
These cameras can cost up to, and
sometimes more than, a thousand
dollars. These cameras of today are
fully electronic and should be
protected from the elements. As the
parade passed by a number of
participants on the floats had
children's water canons and were
spraying water at the spectators.
One float had a large hose and
plenty of water to go with it and the
people on the float had a great time
drenching a dozen or more
spectators across the street from us.
These people were soaked to the
skin and one woman's handbag was
soaked also. Then along came
another float with children's
wading pools filled with Water and
water was thrown into the crowd on
the opposite side of the street. Even
if a person was standing well back
they would have been hit by water
and no doubt anyone with a camera
or hearing aids, being hit would
have these items damaged.
So I ask you this, who is legally
responsible for these actions if
damage was caused to cameras,
videos or hearing aids or if an
elderly person was to try and get
out of the way and fell and broke
some bones?
The community of Atwood and
their Lions Club, who are
professionals when it comes to
putting on a parade have banned
water from being used in their
parades. Maybe it's time other
communities followed this rule, so
spectators who come to see the
parade can enjoy themselves and
not have to worry about being
drenched in water.
Yours truly,
Ron Doig.
THE EDITOR,
I heard about The Blyth Festival
in May from someone who lives in
this region. I later saw an
advertisement in a newspaper, and
obtained a brochure through the
mail by phoning the Festival's
number.
But when I drove here today with
a map in hand, I was shocked at the
lack of road signs announcing all
the turns on small highways to
arrive at the quaint hamlet of Blyth.
I came from Thombury. Was I
not a good map reader and very
determined, I would not have been
able to get here via no fewer than
five highways. I propose your
tourism authority and regional
government get busy and
commission large Blyth Theatre
Festival signs and post them within
a very large radius especially
coming from Toronto and London.
Yours truly,
Catherine D. Campbell.

THE EDITOR,
I bet you know someone, or of
someone, who has got the big C -
cancer. You probably also feel
pretty useless when it comes to
helping them.
So do I, but being part of the
Terry Fox Run helps. I see that
cancer research is progressing. The
treatments are now less damaging
to the patient's body and soul and
are also more effective, especially
with children.
I am in awe again and again as I
take care of hundreds of patients
with cancer, at the strength and
hope of which the human spirit is
capable.
I only see part of the stories -
dramatic surgical solutions to
critical problems caused by the
deadly and tenacious disease.
And it is for those patients and
their families, for the memory of
my own loved ones and to pass the
legend of courage that Terry Fox
embodied, on to the younger
generations, that my family and I,
with a team of dedicated volunteers
.choose to organize the Terry Fox
Run.
Grab a pledge sheet from stores
around town and come and join the
gang on Sunday, Sept. 14. We are
celebrating BIG time. It's our
FOURTH annual Terry Fox Run in
Brussels, and we have made an
incredible $138,000 to date!
Time: 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Location: The Ark Youth Centre
(beside McCutcheon Motors).
Who else does it: walkers,
runners, dogs, strollers, ponies,
horses, rollerbladers, skate boarders
- everyone old and young. If none
of those work for you drive! Come
and join the fun.
Why bother: because your $1 can
make a difference and we care.
Hope to see you there!
Sallianne Patch.
THE EDITOR,
I would like to thank The North
Huron Citizen for making me
Citizen of the Year. I was very
surprised to find out by reading it
in the paper.
Both Ted Johns and I love this
community. People here have
always been generous and
supportive making Blyth a
wonderful place to live and work.
I feel deeply honoured by this
award. Thanks again.
Yours Sincerely,
Janet Amos.
