Each colour was then emphasized in the Bible story that was taught that day. The Bible lessons were first introduced by Sam, our official balloon vendor acted out by Mrs. Brenda Sjaarda. She captivated the children with her many costumes, colourful balloons and sense of humour. Brenda had three helpers: Melanie Bouman, Michelle Klasen and Jody VanderVeen. Together they portrayed in drama the need to use one's gifts to share, care and love one another and to be thankful to God for all He has given. Some Bible lessons the children were taught included the feeding of the 5,000; Miriam's courage in helping to save her brother Moses; Jesus at the temple; the prodigal son and King David. As well as telling the story, children were encouraged to apply these stories to their daily living such as sharing their talents, trusting in God and loving others. Singing was also an important part of each day. Many wonderful songs were taught by Darlene VanderVeen and Bill and Mary Marsh. The songs had kids Watch for SWAT By Kate Kuepfer, Nicole Mastnak and Aaron Cardiff SWAT (Students Working Around Town) '97 has kicked off this year at the Ark with a group of 17 energetic 11-14-year-olds. SWAT members are: Derek Passmore, Amber Park-Shaw, Nicole Lowe, Chrissy Mason, Lee Dilworth, Courtney Sallows, Nicole Mastnak, Ryan Mawhinney, Matt Clarkson, Cody Nichol, Doug Mitchell, Evan Horst, Rachel Elliot, Kate Kuepfer, Elyse Wilkinson, Ashley Keffer and Brittany Kellington. SWAT members have been active in the Brussels community clapping, shouting and praising God. Of course no fair is complete without clowns and face painting. Each day four clowns entertained the kids and helped paint faces. They were especially loved by the little ones. After singing and listening to Brenda and her helpers, the children went into classes. Grades 2 to 6 walked to the United Church while the others stayed at the Christian Reformed Church. During their class time the lessons were further emphasized and interesting crafts were completed. The week ended with a delicious potluck lunch in Blyth Lions Park. Les and Jackie Cook then entertained the children with a puppet show. The final event was a special presentation made during the worship service Sunday morning in the Blyth Christian Reformed Church. There, Brenda, in her official balloon vendor costume, helped describe the week while the children sang the main songs. It was a very busy week and it seemed as if a good time was had by all. I hope to hear more of the tunes we learned as I*go about my daily activities. And kids; it's okay if it's a little off key! helping out at Huronlea, the library's Camp-Rent-alot and the Ark's Junior Summer Recreation Program. Other projects that have been done include painting the Lions statue in front of the library, painting inside the Ark and holding a car wash at the Ark, which was well supported. With Homecoming just around the comer SWAT is winding up to show their support for Brussels by helping out with Kid's Street and participating in the parade. A big pre-homecoming cleanup is panned for the afternoon of Wednesday, July 31. Remember to keep your eyes open for Students Working Around Town.
