Walton students display talent in year- end show
It was wind down and wind up
time for the last two days of
Walton school. Monday was the
last half of the talent show and the
Grade 4 'send off. Gloria Wilbee
entertained the children and visitors
by singing Was a Farmer had a
Dog and Heroes.
Then Mrs. Scott introduced
Laura Elligsen (Grade 2), who sang
Joy is like the Rain. Andrea
VanderVeen came up next and
played a piano piece that she
composed herself. Andrew
VanVliet showed off his piano
skills by playing Yankee Doodle
and Twinkle Twinkle.
The talent then switched gears as
Laura Elligsen, Cassandra Banks
and Nikki VanderVeen put on their
little skit about the two bad pigs
and the happy fairy. Their message
was 'do not fight'.
Taylor Bennewies who is in
junior kindergarten took his turn
and sang, Sister for Sale. Taylor is
blessed with three sisters. His
grandma, Horan, accompanied him
on the piano. His sister Kelsey,
played the Ballad of Davey Crocket
on the piano.
Another change in pace
happened when Laura Bowers, in
grade 1 did a stepdancing number.
Back to the piano came Jennifer
Eedy, who did such a wonderful
job of playing, Mary Had a Little
Lamb that Mrs. Scott asked her if
she would play next year for her
little jks.
Erica Dietz and Krista Shortreed,
sporting sunglasses, stepped their
w^y through a number. Mrs. Scott
was amazed that they weren't even
puffing. The girls replied that they
could even dance for an hour.

Couple raises pigeons
I don't know what you think
about pigeons or if you think about
pigeons at all but I just met
someone new in town that happens
to have some very different
pigeons. On behalf of the Walton
community I would like to
welcome Yvonne and Don
Kitchener to our fair village.
After moving quite a few times
they have decided that Walton is
the place they want to be. Walton,
says Don is very similar to the
place he grew up, Claireville,
which is the most northwestern tip
of Toronto. When he was around
eight or nine he raised pigeons. He
had tumblers, tipplers and regular
bam pigeons. Don has decided to
get involved with pigeons again
and he now has 20 Burmingham
Roller pigeons. He said that they
are wonderful to watch as they do
their acrobats in the air. Right now
the pigeons are nesting and getting
used to their surroundings. These
pigeons will lay two eggs every 18
to 20 days and usually just one of
the chicks will survive. Don says
he still has a lot to learn but looks
forward to it.
Yvonne commented that she has
met a lot of nice people since
moving in. She enjoys doing
homemade crafts of all sorts and
she designs knitting patterns. Right
now she has Blue Jays, Dalmatian,
Lion King and Pocahontas patterns
that she has made up.
Don likes to collect and restore
old Ford tractors. Right now he has
a 1939-9N, 1048-8N and a 1942-
2N tractor. He also in his spare
time, rebuilds air compressors,
paints cars, fixes up old cars and
trucks and does carpentry work. I
guess you could say that he is a
regular 'handy man'. Once again
folks, welcome to Walton.
then came and played a duet on the
piano. The show ended with Gloria
and Mark Wilbee singing The
Lions Sleeps Tonight. They sang it
again and had the whole school
singing along with them.
Mrs. Vandendool then brought
her Grade 4s to the front. They
introduced themselves. Then sitting
in a circle they began voicing their
concerns about what next year in
Seaforth will hold for them. Some
said they heard that the Grade 7/8
beat up on the new kids from
Walton. She heard that they have
great teachers there, and that you
can sign up for soccer. One student
said he didn't want to leave Walton.
Mrs. Vandendool jumped in and
told him that he had to go!
Mrs. Vandendool told her class
that last year she had written a
poem for the Grade 4s but this year
she wrote little messages about
each kid starting with 'May you
always be' and here are a few of
them. May you be as comical as
you are now, as easy to get along
with, as creative, helpful, pleasant,
hold fast to your dreams, enjoy
good humour, do well in sports.
She gave them further advice
when going into Grade 5 and
wished them good luck.
Then came the slides with shots
of each Grade 4 doing something.
It was set to the song, What a
Wonderful World and I don't think
that there were many dry eyes. The
kids ended the program by singing,
Pocahontas.
Mrs. Crocker called Mrs.
Vandendool forward and handed
her congratulation certificates to
hand out to the Grade 4 students.
Have a wonderful summer kids!

Students, parents, friends and staff enjoyed the final talent
show segment at Walton PS last week. Taylor Bennewies,
accompanied by his grandmother at the piano, was one of
