The Citizen, 1997-06-25, Page 22By Mark Nonkes Her picture hangs in your Post Office, she’s on one side of our coins. She is the most famous person in Canada, likely across the entire world. Her family and herself are the most popular on going news items. I’m sure you know I am talking about Her Majesty, the Queen of England. This week Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip will be visiting Canada. Their tour of our country will come right close to home, as they will be visiting London and staying in St. Thomas for a "day of rest". Queen Elizabeth was officially crowned Queen of England on June 2, 1953. She has four children, the oldest being Prince Charles, who is next in line for the throne, although his actions with his ex-wife Diana are less than royal. Then comes Princess Anne, the least known Royal who keeps out of the public eye, most of the time. Next is Prince Andrew; his problems with Fergie are well known. And the youngest, Prince Edward, is also usually out of the public eye. Like their ancestors, they have lived in the famous Buckingham Palace. It is said they have over $4.5 billion including assets. Many suspect, due to Prince Charles' unpopularity and the Queen's long life, that perhaps the next to take the throne will be Prince Harry. But what does all this have to do with Canadian teenagers? Why should we care about Monarchy? Canada still has ties with Britain; all dating back to when they fought France for, at that time, a colony. The British fully governed until we signed our Confederation in 1867. We joined forces with "our parent country" to help fight for Europe in both world wars. The history goes on and on. The Queen and her family are a very important symbol of our heritage, of how our country came to where it is today. The Queen is sort of like a grandmother to Canada. If things go desperately wrong here we can count on her and her country for their support. But most of the time she just greets us with a smile and supports our decisions. That's why it's very fitting that she celebrate Canada Day with us. She represents our past and how this great country came to be. In days gone by By Ashley Gropp "When I was your age, I..." I'm sure we all have heard this line. It is used by aunts, uncles, grandparents, family friends, and even parents. It tends to cause a teenager to groan in desperation, knowing what will follow. Here is a list of some of the most popular, though not necessarily true ones: 1) The snow was up to the top of the telephone poles — in July. 2) They had to walk five or 10 miles to school everyday because there were no buses. 3) They woke up at 4 every morning to do all the chores by themselves. 4) They didn't have any running water in the house, so they had to walk across the 100-acre farm to the outhouse and wash in the pond (which wasn't easy in January). 5) They never had any new clothes — they were all second hand (even for the oldest child!). 6) There was only one toy at Christmas and it was always homemade. 7) School was a lot harder — if you graduated Grade 8 you must have been a genius. 8) The teachers were so harsh and so strict that NOBODY EVER misbehaved. 9) If a kid dressed the way they do today, they were the hired hands. 10) The only names on their jeans were their own on the inside label (no Levi's, Lee's, etc.) Summer dreams conquer exams By Erin Roulston Only eight minutes until I begin to write my fourth and final exam. The students are lined up against the walls outside the cafeteria (our exam room) flipping through their notebooks in hopes of learning one last thing. They are all quizzing their classmates. One girls has her head tucked between her knees and is chanting: "I'm going to fail, I'm going to fail..." Finally 9:30 arrives and we all file into the room and take a seat. This is exam week. Pure excitement, what we teens look forward to all year. NOT! Oh, the stress, the cramming, all this work that our brains just aren't used to. This is teen-hell. There is only one positive thing about final exams: when they are over it is SUMMER, and you never have to go to those classes ever again! The only thought that keeps us alive is the dream of beaches and ice cream, and sleeping in in the morning. Well, maybe I'm being a little over-dramatic, but what kind of story would this be without a little embellishment? I have a tendency to under prepare for my exams. Last night, for example, I began studying at 9 p.m. for my Spanish exam. Then at 9:30 I realized I should have started a lot earlier. So then of course, I work my hardest to squish a whole semester's worth of information into my head in just a matter of hours. Finally I came to the realization that I would never learn it all and went to bed. Going into the exam I know I'm unprepared, and that I will have to fake my way through the occasional question. Fifty minutes later I'm finished. Wow, was that easy! Well, it wasn't easy, but I did very well. It's funny with exams. You always expect.. you are going to flunk, and then it isn't so bad, or you're sure you'll ace it, and it nearly kills you. Either way, pass or fail, it's nice to know that life will go on and you still have a whole summer ahead of you, even if you are going to spend it in summer school.
