Stephen captured that championship title, while the A crown didn't even have to be taken home, as the hosting Brussels club skated to victory. Brussels Tykes, playoff champs SjJort^ Wingham PeeWees win WOAA crown After finishing the regular season with wins over Blyth and Zurich in which Brussels scored an amazing 13 times, the Tykes went on to become South Division Champs at a tournament this weekend in Brussels. Leading the scoring for Brussels was Chris Corbett with five, Christopher Jutzi with four, Jordan Campbell with back-to-back goals which were his first goals, and Adam Corbett and Jake VanBeek with one each. Brussels Tykes entered the annual Clinton tournament on March 7, 8 and 9. After losing to Port Elgin in the first round Brussels went right on to the "B" final against Seaforth by beating Stephen Twp. and Lucknow. Without their leading scorer, Brussels had beaten Lucknow and only Seaforth stood in their way of winning the "B". The final was close all the way. After regulation time the score was tied and a six-minute overtime was next. With only 30 seconds left to play Adam Corbett scored to take the lead, but then Seaforth scored with 10 seconds left to force a sudden-death shootout. Once the rules were laid out to both teams the three players were picked and put in the penalty box to wait for their chance to shoot. Adam Corbett took his spot opposite the Seaforth player at centre ice. According to Coach Charles Corbett, when the whistle blew both players were to start skating towards two goalies, but the Seaforth player never moved so the Brussels player stopped half way. The referee told him to keep going. Then just as he started to skate again the Seaforth goalie skated out and poke-checked the puck away. Seaforth scored to win the game and Brussels received the "B" runner up. The year-end tournament for the Brussels Tykes was a chance to show how well they had improved over the season. The first game was against Elma Logan, who Brussels had beaten all season long. However Elma Logan were not going down easy. Brussels opened the scoring with three unanswered goals, but Elma scored two. Chris Corbett scored the final goal of the game with five minutes left and Brussels defence held off Elma for the win. Game two was against first place Stephen Twp. Again Brussels struck hard and fast to take the lead, three-zip with Chris Corbett scoring all three. But Stephen Twp. scored and kept the pressure on. However Christopher Jutzi scored for Brussels who went on to win 4 to 2. Assisting on one of Corbett's goals was Tom Cronin. Game three was against the Clinton Grizzlies. This game was a close game at first, after two quick starts in the last two games, but Brussels finally scored five unanswered goals to move on the "A" championship final. The final was a great hockey battle between Brussels "Little Ringers" and Goderich Red team. The Tykes dominated the game from start to finish, never giving up the lead. Scoring first for Brussels was Wade Stevenson. Then Chris Corbett, the team's season leading scorer with well over 130 goals, started to find the net and scored four straight goals with help from Lance Stafford and Stevenson, who each received two assists. The Tykes were not finished yet! Defenceman Adam Corbett broke in on a break away to score his first of the game. Scoring the final goal for Brussels was Alyssa Gowing, assisted by Christopher Jutzi. The final score was 7-3 for the "A" champions, the Brussels Little Ringers. Coach Corbett said, "I would like to thank all of the parents and especially the players who got better and better as the year went on." The Brussels Tykes consisted of Jake VanBeek, who Coach Corbett said, played "terrific in net", Chase Chapman a solid defenceman, Jordon Campbell a great back checking defenceman, Adam Corbett a great offensive playing defenceman, Ryan Jutzi a very much improved defenceman, William King a great net protecting defenceman, Tyler Deitner a great hustler for both defence and forward, Wade Stevenson a great offensive forward, Alyssa Gowing a terrific first year forward, Mathew Souch a great team player, Lance Stafford a great hustling forward, Zach Hoegy a great team player, Andrew Baker a forward player, Tom Cronin a great positional player, Shane Gibson a great in-front-of-the-net forward, Christopher Jutzi a great offensive forward at centre, and Chris Corbett a great one-on-one centre. The Wingham Legion PeeWees scored a 2-1 overtime decision over Lucknow to win the WOAA championship in three games. Lucknow scored the first goal of the game, when Rick Andrews netted a power-play marker. Playing their best game of the series and backed by the solid goaltending of Blue Weins, Lucknow held the one-goal advantage until the third period. Lucknow ran into penalty problems, after Wingham had been called for several penalties in the first two periods. Zachary O'Krafka tied the game at one with a goal which barely crossed the goal line. Curtis Knight and Kent McPherson assisted. Lucknow then took a penalty in the last minute of the period which carried over into the overtime. O'Krafka scored early in the overtime session to win the game and the WOAA champion­ ship for Wingham. Jamie Chester received the assist Zane Davies was playing his first game in net since breaking his hand. He played a strong game. Wingham's winning streak now stands at 15 games. Wingham moves on to the six point OMHA semi-final series against Port Stanley. They staved off elimination by scoring a 4-3 win over Port Stanley in game three. Port Stanley holds a two gamq to one lead in the best of five series. O'Krafka opened the scoring in game three with Kent McPherson and Knight earning the assists. It was the first time in the series that Wingham had held the lead. Port Stanley replied with goals from Carl Hayes and Scott Verbruggen. Wingham regained the lead in the second period with goals by Knight and O'Krafka and Justin Campbell from Matthew Dinning. Davies made big saves on break­ aways to preserve a 3-2 Wingham lead after two periods. Wingham began the third period shorthanded. Then with four minutes left in the third period, Matt Lynch tied the game at three for Port Stanley. Port Stanley opened the series with an 8-4 discussion in the first game in Wingham. The first period was a close encounter of the hockey kind. Dave Cook opened the scoring for Port Stanley, but Chester evened the game at one with help from Jake Henderson and Campbell. Verbruggen regained the lead for Port Stanley but McPherson quickly tied the game from Chester and O'Krafka. Hayes gave Port Stanley the lead with 30 seconds left in the period. Davies was called upon to make exceptional saves on a couple of Port Stanley break-aways in the second period. Cook scored the Continued on page 11
